Third period explosion goes the way of the Wildcats in win over Princeton

Chisago Lakes 6, Princeton 4
The Wildcat boys’ hockey team led 3-0 after two periods against the Princeton Tigers and appeared to be in control of the game.  But things got a little wild in the third period.  The teams scored seven goals between them, including two shorthanded goals by Princeton and two power play goals by the Wildcats.  The Wildcats finally sealed the win on a power play goal by Jace Meierhoff with eight seconds to go, making the final score Chisago Lakes 6, Princeton 4.  The Tigers outshot the Wildcats 34-23 for the game.  Six different players scored goals for the Wildcats, and eight players had assists.  The game was played at Chisago Lakes Arena on Thursday, December 21.

Luke Zaruba got the Wildcats on the board nine minutes into the first period.  He carried the puck into the zone down the left side two-on-one with Adam Hanson.  Zaruba fired from the lower left circle.  The goalie appeared to get a piece of it, but the puck slid across the line and into the back of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.  Chase Hemme scored with 90 seconds left in the period, assisted by Jackson Waltman and Sam Helland, to put the Wildcats up 2-0 after one period.

Only one goal was scored in the second period.  Ben Johnson held the puck in the Tiger zone at the left point and fired a shot on net.  Jake Larson pounced on the rebound at the right post and jammed it into the net to increase the Wildcats lead to 3-0.  Princeton scored twice in the first four minutes of the third period, including a shorthanded goal, to cut the Wildcat lead to 3-2  The Wildcats responded quickly.  On the power play, Devin Wahlberg wristed a shot from the top of the right circle into the upper left hand corner of the net to put the Wildcats up by two at the 4:40 mark.  Jace Meierhoff and Thomas Overgaard got the assists.  But the Tigers scored just 16 seconds later to cut the lead back down to one.

The Wildcats responded four minutes later.  From the right half wall, Logan Bjorkman popped a short pass to Chase Mehlhorn in the right circle.  Mehlhorn slid a pass behind his back to a speeding Hanson at the top of the slot.  Hanson deked one defender and fired it through the five hole from the low slot to make the score 5-3.  With five minutes left in the period, the Tigers scored another shorthanded goal to cut the Wildcat lead back down to one.  Meierhoff put the icing on the cake with eight seconds to play.  The Tigers took a penalty with 14 seconds left in the game.  From the faceoff in the right circle, Hemme passed the puck back to Bjorkman at the right point.  Bjorkman launched a shot and Meierhoff cleaned up the rebound, one-timing it from the doorstep through the five hole to make the score 6-4.
The Wildcats took just one penalty for the game and scored on two of their three power play opportunities.

Hockey Hullaballoo
The Wildcats were playing in the Schwan’s Cup at the Schwan Supper Rink this week.  Results were not available for Tuesday and Wednesday’s games in time for publication.  The Wildcats will play their final tournament game today against an opponent yet to be determined at press time.  On Tuesday, January 2, the Wildcats will travel to the Princeton Ice Arena for a 7 p.m. rematch of last Thursday’s game.
