Vikings out-grapple Wildcats, both lose to Cambridge-Isanti at triangular

Cambridge-Isanti Triangular
The Vikings and Wildcats met up for a dual at the Cambridge-Isanti Triangular last Thursday, December 21.  The Vikings came out on top, beating the Wildcats 39-24.  Both the Vikings and Wildcats lost to Cambridge-Isanti.  The Vikings lost 59-17 and the Wildcats were shut out 74-0.

In the Viking-Wildcat dual, Vikings Brandt Bombard (113), Jack Anderson (138) and Austin Sonnek (145) all pinned their Wildcat opponents.  With a major decision by Ashton LaBelle (106) and a technical fall by Josh Logan (126) and double forfeits at 120 and 132, the Vikings led 27-0 after the 145-pound match.  The Wildcats picked up 12 points in the next three matches.  Austin Siefert (152) won by pin.  Josh Wenthe (160) beat Viking Sam Sonnek 14-11 in the closest match of the evening.  And with Brendan Huffman’s decision at 170, the Wildcats cut the Viking lead to 27-12.  The Wildcats forfeited at 182 and 195 and the Vikings forfeited at 220.  Wildcat Zach Carlson pinned Viking Brandon Swanson in the last match of the evening, to make the final score North Branch 39, Chisago Lakes 24.

Viking assistant coach Kyle Kahl said “We did very well coming out of the gate.  Captain Jack Anderson led by example with a pin at 138.  Jack has shown leadership both on and off the mat and is one of the reasons we have shown improvement this season.”

Wrestling Notes
The Wildcats will head up to Grand Rapids for a ten-team invitational that starts tomorrow at 10 a.m.  The Vikings are off until a tournament at Ogilvie High School on Saturday, January 6 that also starts at 10 a.m.
