Vikings dominate early, misstep in final game of holiday tournament

North Branch 11, Willmar 0
Cody Moline scored four goals and Brady Meyer added a hat trick to lead the Viking boys’ hockey team to an 11-0 shellacking of the Willmar Cardinals in the opening game of the Little Falls Holiday tournament.  Playmaker Jacob Richards had four assists.  Moline, Meyer and Justin Sachs had two assists apiece.  Alec Hink scored twice and added an assist.  Nick Jensen had a goal and an assist.  Junior Kade Koecher scored his first career goal.  And four players tallied one assist apiece:  Jared Schmitt, Cody Croal, Dawson Johnson and Tim Moll.  The Vikings dominated from start to finish and put the game away with seven goals in the second period.  They outshot the Cardinals 42-16 for the game.  Viking goalie Trevor Mellen stopped all 16 shots he faced to record his first shutout of the season.  The game was played at Exchange Arena in Little Falls on Wednesday, December 27.

North Branch 5, Fargo Sheyenne (N.D.) 2
Cody Croal scored his first career hat trick to lead the Vikings to a 5-2 win in the second game of the Little Falls Holiday Tournament.  Brady Meyer had a goal and four assists, including assists on all three of Croal’s goals.  Nick Jensen also gets a playmaker nod with three assists.  Goaltending made a difference in this one.  Shots were nearly even, with the Viking having a 33-30 edge, but Viking goalie Jake Turek stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced to help the Vikings to victory.  The game was played Thursday, December 28.

Little Falls 3, North Branch 0
In the final game of the Little Falls Holiday Tournament, the Vikings were shut out by the host team, the Little Falls Flyers, 3-0.  The game was tightly contested and the defenses for both teams were solid.  Special teams made the difference in this one, with the Flyers scoring two shorthanded goals – one an empty netter – and a power play goal.  The Vikings were zero for seven on the power play.
Little Falls scored just over four minutes into the first period to take a 1-0 lead.  They gave themselves a little breathing room with a goal just 90 seconds into the third period.  And when a player went off for tripping at 14:25 of the third period, the Vikings pulled their goalie to create a six-on-four advantage in the Flyer zone.  But the Flyers scored into the empty net just 30 seconds later to seal the win.  The Vikings outshot the Flyers 24-22 for the game.  The game was played Friday, December 29.

Hockey Hullaballoo
