North Branch 3, Rogers 2 Cody Moline scored with five seconds left in the second period to put the Vikings up by one goal over the Rogers Royals at 3-2. The Vikings and goalie Jake Turek kept the Royals at bay in the third period and the Vikings won by the same score. Special team play was the key to victory in this one. All three Viking goals came on the power play as they converted three of six chances. The Vikings killed all three Rogers power play opportunities. The Vikings outshot the Royals 30-20 for the game and Turek stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced for his third win of the season. The game was played at Chisago Lakes Arena in Lindstrom on Tuesday, January 23.
Justin Sachs opened the scoring with a power play goal six minutes into the first period, assisted by Moline and Brady Meyer. Rogers scored to tie it about five minutes later, and the teams went into the first intermission tied at 1-1. The Royals went up 2-1 on a goal at 7:07 of the second period. The Vikings answered with a power play goal at 13:40 as Meyer scored, assisted by Moline and Nick Jensen, to tie the game at 2-2. And Moline’s unassisted goal with five seconds left in the period proved to be the game winner. North Branch 5, St. Francis 2 Brady Meyer scored two goals as the Vikings dominated the St. Francis Fighting Saints and came away with a 5-2 win Friday, January 26 at Chisago Lakes Arena in Lindstrom. The Vikings outshot the Saints 41-25 for the game. They managed to stay out of the penalty box, for the most part, and didn’t allow the Saints to score on either of their power play opportunities. Meanwhile. The Vikings converted two of their seven chances on the power play. Goalie Trevor Mellen stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced to pick up the win.
Justin Sachs scored on a great individual effort midway through the first period to put the Vikings up 1-0. The score stayed that way till the 10:51 mark of the second period, when Meyer scored, assisted by Nick Jensen, to double the Viking lead to 2-0. St. Francis scored about two minutes after that to cut the Viking lead to 2-1, but Jacob Richards answered for the Vikings two minutes later to put the Vikings back up by two at 3-1.
The Saints scored just under three minutes into the third period to cut the Viking lead to 3-2. But Jensen scored at 8:38, assisted by Richards, to stretch the Viking lead to 4-2. And Meyer put the icing on the cake with a power play goal with five seconds left in the game to make the final score 5-2. Jensen and Sachs picked up assists on Meyer’s goal.
North Branch 13, Becker/Big Lake 1 Brady Meyer scored four goals and added two assists as the Vikings stung the Becker/Big Lake Hornets 13-1 at Chisago Lakes Arena this past Monday, January 29. Cody Croal, Justin Sachs and Alec Hink each had two goals and an assist. Cody Moline was the playmaker for the evening with a goal and three assists. Wyatt Garin and Dawson Johnson scored the other two goals for the Vikings. Matt Courtright and Jacob Richards had two assists each. Picking up one assist apiece were Zachariah Larson, Dawson Linkert, Nick Jensen, Johnson and Tim Moll. Larson’s assist was his first point this season. The Vikings outshot the Hornets 40-19 and goalie Trevor Mellen stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced.
Hockey Hullaballoo Cody Moline and Brady Meyer now have exactly the same scoring statistics. They have 24 goals apiece, which ties for tenth in the state. They each have 27 assists, tied for eighth in that category. And their total of 51 total points each ties them for fourth place in the state.
The Vikings (15-5-0) will head to the Mora Civic Center to take on Mora/Milaca at the Mora Civic Center tonight at 7:30 p.m. And on Saturday, they will take on the resurgent Chisago Lakes Wildcats (6-11-3) at 2:00 p.m. at Chisago Lakes Arena. The Vikings beat the Wildcats 7-3 on January 26, just a day after the Wildcat coaching change.
