After early upset over Princeton, Wildcats knocked out by familiar foe

Section Quarterfinals:  Chisago Lakes 3, Princeton 1
Thomas Overgaard scored twice and had an assist and Brooks Stangl stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced to lead the fifth-seeded Wildcats to a 3-1 win over the fourth-seeded Princeton Tigers last Thursday, February 22 at Princeton Arena.  The win sent the Wildcats to the section semifinal game against top-seeded Monticello.

With about six minutes to go in the second period, Jace Meierhoff was just coming off the bench when Alex Walden intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and passed it to Overgaard.  Overgaard and Meierhoff headed into the Tiger zone two-on-one.  Overgaard passed the puck across to Meierhoff.  Meierhoff waited until the net opened up and shot the puck over the goalie’s glove into the upper right corner of the net to put the Wildcats up 1-0.  Wildcat players erupted and jumped off the bench to celebrate with Meierhoff along the glass, with the Wildcat student section celebrating right in front of them.

The Wildcats finally got an insurance goal at 11:52 of the third period.  Tate Swanson and Jackson Waltman held the puck deep in the Princeton zone with an aggressive forecheck.  A Princeton player finally got the puck loose and started to carry it out of the zone.  Overgaard stepped into the play and stripped the puck from the Princeton player with a stick check, skated to the top of the circle and fired a shot into the back of the net to put the Wildcats up 2-0.  The Wildcat student section showed their approval by flying to that end of the ice and tapping a large “Easy” button.  Princeton scored 90 seconds later to cut the Wildcat lead to 2-1.  Later in the period, the Tigers pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.  With just a few seconds left in the game, Overgaard got a hold of the puck at the top of the circles in the Wildcat zone and, looking a lot like his golf game, flipped it toward the other end of the ice.  The puck hit the ice and had just the right English to slide into the net with two seconds left to make the final score 3-1.

Viking head coach Cale Arhart said “I thought we played really well, especially after we had not played for a week and a half before the Princeton game.  It was nice to see the players show up right away.  It’s the first time we played with full effort from the first puck drop till the end of the game. We had a really nice penalty kill throughout the game.  And Brooks played another standout game for us in the nets, coming up with big saves while the guys in front of him were helping out by blocking shots.”
Section Semifinals:  Monticello 5, Chisago Lakes 2
In the Section 5A semifinal game, top-seeded Monticello scored three times in the third period to break a 2-2 and beat the Wildcats 5-2 Tuesday, February 27 at Moose Sherritt Arena in Monticello.  The loss knocked the Wildcats out of the playoffs.

Nick Foldesi of Monticello scored four minutes into the first period to put the Magic up 1-0.  With just under five minutes to go in the period, Tate Swanson scored a power play goal for the Wildcats, assisted by Devin Wahlberg and Tucker Bakken, to tie the game at 1-1.  Matt Miller scored two minutes later for the Magic and they led 2-1 after the first period.  But the resilient Wildcats hung in there.  They outshot Monticello 15-8 in the second period and were rewarded when Thomas Overgaard scored an unassisted goal at 13:22 to tie the game at 2-2 going into the third period.  But Monticello scored two minutes into the period and again near the halfway point to go up 4-2.  They added an empty-netter at the end to make the final score 5-2.  The Magic outshot the Wildcats 41-26 for the game.  Wildcat goalie Brooks Stangl stopped 36 of the 40 shots he faced.
