Vikings double-up Mora
After blowing out Columbia Heights to open the season, the North Branch girls basketball team blew through another opponent on Friday, December 7 when they doubled up Mora 48-24.
The girls built on their excellent defensive effort from the season opener and limited Mora very well.
“We played excellent defense against Mora, holding their top two players to a combined four points,” Head Coach Alison Trampe said. “The girls moved the ball on offense and we played very unselfish, team basketball. It was a fun home opener with a lot of girls contributing to the win.”
Gail Nelson, Kate Carlson and Paige Peaslee each had 10 points, and Nelson had a double-double, adding 12 rebounds. Peaslee chipped in seven rebounds.
Hibbing 55, North Branch 39
The Vikings couldn’t keep their winning streak alive when they took on Abbey McDonald and Hibbing on Saturday, December 8 in the second half of a back-to-back.
The Vikings played tough with Hibbing, who features 2,000 career point-scorer Abbey McDonald. The game was close until the very end, with North Branch leading by just seven at halftime and nine with just a few minutes left in the game.
“Even though we lost, I think the girls realized that we have the ability to compete with a top team in our section,” Trampe said. “I was really impressed with how we played.”
The girls had balanced scoring, but no one player stood out. Freshman Maddie Helin led the Vikings with a nice spark off the bench, scoring nine points, Carlson had eight, Peaslee and Nelson had seven and Bunes added six.
