Vikings blow out East Central

North Branch 69, East Central 27
When Megan Bunes got hot against East Central in the Vikings big win over East Central, nearly everyone in the gym knew the game was over.

The North Branch defense was already smothering the overmatched Eagles when Bunes caught fire, and the other Vikings players did a great job getting the ball to her during her run. She ended up scoring 24 points, nearly outscoring East Central by herself.

“We played excellent defense and executed our offense extremely well against East Central,” Head Coach Alison Trampe said. “We completely shut down their leading scorers. It was a really fun game to be a part of, with a lot of girls contributing.

Outside of Bunes’ explosion, Paige Peaslee had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, Maddie Helin scored 12 points to go with seven boards, and Kate Carlson had 10 points and five steals for NB.

Cloquet 67, North Branch 47
The Vikings waded into sectional play when they traveled up to Cloquet on Thursday, December 20.

The long school day bookended by the long bus ride up to Cloquet did a number on the girls, as they got off to a rough start. The Lumberjacks had a big first half lead before NB whittled it down to six before halftime.

Even with just eight minutes left in the game, North Branch was in striking distance at eight points, but then the fouls and the exhaustion of fighting back all game took its toll and the ‘Jacks started to take over.

“Cloquet had some height and some quickness that we struggled with a bit,” Trampe said. “I was very proud of how we pulled together as a team and played with a lot fo heart and intensity until the final buzzer.

Bunes led the offensive charge again, scoring 14 points. Carlson had 12 points, Peaslee had eight points and 11 rebounds, and Helin added eight points in the losing effort.
