Vikes grab their second win
North Branch snapped their four game losing streak with a resounding come-from-behind win over Milaca on Friday, December 28, in the midst of a wet and heavy sleet storm.
The Vikings did not respond well early after trudging to the gym through the snow. “I thought that our energy and execution were not very good to start out with,” Head Coach Alex Kuhlman.
Despite the slow start, the Vikings actually held a lead late in the first half at 26-25, but then things started to unravel. The Wolves went on a 22-8 run between the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half to go up 47-34, and the Vikings looked like they might suffer their toughest loss of the year against a small school. But, the Vikes woke up for the final 15 minutes of the game, and pulled off a stunning comeback.
North Branch went on a 46-17 run over the next 13 minutes. They played near flawless basketball. “That was the best stretch of basketball we have played all season,” Kuhlman said. “It really was a story of two halves with nearly every statistical category being much better in the second half. I was really happy with the way that our players responded in the second half and our crowd played a huge part of that. For being poor weather and a game during the holiday break, our crowd was big and loud!”
Drew VanEerden was one of the big catalysts to the comeback. He had just five points at half, but ended the game with 24 after he scored 19 in the second half. He added five assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Conner Hartmann added 19 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. Colby Knutson had 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists. “Colby was essential in breaking the press for us and did a great job attacking the basket,” Kuhlman noted after the contest.
Carter Whitman had 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
This was a true team effort for us and it came at a perfect time,” Kuhlman said. “We are looking forward to building some momentum in the new year.”
