Richfield takes it to Vikings
Richfield 76, North Branch 61
In their first action after an extended Christmas break due to some weather-related cancellations, the North Branch boys basketball team came out sluggish on Thursday, January 3 against the Richfield Spartans.
They found themselves down by nine at halftime, and Richfield kept extending the lead in the second half. North Branch is still without senior captain Zach Gazda as he recovers from a knee injury sustained just before Christmas.
Many of North Branch’s issues stemmed from a reliance on just a few players. Colby Knutson scored 23, Drew VanEerden had 14 and Carter Whitman had 10, but nobody elses on the team had over four points, and when Richfield was able to key in on just three guys, it left the Vikings shorthanded.
Richfield, on the other hand, had seven guys score over six points with Ryan Miles leading the way with 17.
The Vikings played Cambridge-Isanti earlier this week at C-I before taking on Mora, Princeton, Chisago Lakes, St. Francis and Hermantown over the next week and change. Princeton is ranked second in the state in Class AAA, and Hermantown and St. Francis will be challenges for the Vikes.
