Junker leads 'Cats past Bemidji

Chisago Lakes 4, Bemidji 0
Was Wildcat softball starting pitcher Trinity Junker ready for the first game of her senior season?  You be the judge.  Junker allowed just one hit and struck out 18 batters – and had two of the Wildcats’ six hits and two RBIs, for good measure – to lead her team to a 4-0 shutout of the Bemidji Lumberjacks on Friday, April 5 at Chisago Lakes High School.  It’s not a bad way to start the season, against an opponent that made it to the state tournament last year.

The Wildcat outfield had little to do – the only ball that got through the infield was a sixth inning dribbler up the middle for the Lumberjacks’ only hit of the game.  The infielders weren’t much busier, as they only had to deal with two ground balls and one popup the entire game.  The Lumberjacks didn’t know what hit them right out of the gate – Junker struck out the first seven batters she faced.

The Wildcats got all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first.  Natalie Thornburg doubled with one out.  Jessica Bergerson reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second.  Thornburg scored and Bergerson moved to third.  Kaitlyn Istvanovich hit a sacrifice fly to right center to score Bergerson and the Wildcats led 2-0.  In the fourth, Istvanovich singled.  Spicer grounded to the pitcher, forcing Istvanovich at second, but Spicer reach first.  Junker tripled with two outs to drive in Spicer all the way from first base and the Wildcat were up 3-0.  The Wildcats scored the game’s final run in the fifth.  Istvanovich led off the inning with a double and, two outs later, scored from second on a single by Junker.
Softball Stuff
The Wildcats are supposed to host the Princeton Tigers at 4:30 p.m. tonight, but if the predicted snow hit, it’s likely that one will get postponed.  Same with tomorrow’s doubleheader at home – a 2:30 p.m. game against Grand Rapids and a 4:30 p.m. game against Duluth Denfeld.  Hopefully, the snow will melt by Monday, April 15, when the Wildcats are scheduled to play the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets at Cambridge at 4:30 p.m.  They will head to Big Lake on Tuesday, April 16 to take on the Hornets at 4:30 p.m.
