Vikings can't replicate last
season's success on the diamond
With so many graduations from last year, it was tough all season to capture last year’s magic for the North Branch softball team, and their dream of getting back to the state tournament was dashed over Memorial Day weekend with losses to Cloquet and Grand Rapids.
The fourth-seeded Vikings opened the section tournament with a rousing 10-0 win over fifth-seeded Duluth Denfeld.
That had North Branch dreaming of at least final four potential, if not a repeat section championship. But, top-seeded Cloquet, who had only edged past NB earlier in the year, is playing well, and when the section location moved up there, the Lumberjacks caught fire.
They dominated NB 11-2 to send the Lady Vikes to the losers bracket.
They still had a chance to fight through that and get back to the winning side, but they didn’t play well in their second game of the day, either, dropping another 11-2 game to sixth-seeded Grand Rapids.
It was a disappointing and sudden end to the season that started with promise.
However, it’s a good learning experience for the young team, and they’ll be back again next year.
