Chisago Lakes can't take The Pig back from Forest Lake, losing 7-1
Monticello 2, Chisago Lakes 0
Monticello scored twice in the first half and held on to beat the Wildcats 2-0 on Thursday, September 5 at Chisago Lakes High School.
Forest Lake 7, Chisago Lakes 1
Thanks largely to freshman goalkeeper Dominic Driscoll, the Wildcats trailed just 1-0 going into halftime in their home game against the Forest Lake Rangers last Saturday, September 7 at Chisago Lakes. The Rangers scored a goal in the first minute of the second half on a shot that was tipped by Driscoll, hit low on the crossbar, went straight down and bounced into the net. A couple of minutes later, Driscoll was hurt making a save and was replaced in the net by defender Luke Wille. Wille also made some nice saves, but as the Wildcat defense got more tired the Forest Lake shots got more frequent and more accurate and the Rangers scored six goals in the second half. To add insult to injury, the Wildcats didn’t even score the goal that spoiled the shutout – it was an own goal by the Rangers.
Legacy Christian 1, Chisago Lakes 0
The Legacy Christian Lions scored once in the second half, shutting out the Wildcats 1-0 this past Monday, September 9 at Chisago Lakes High School.
The Pig – for the fourth year in a row, the Wildcats and Rangers played for a traveling trophy simply known as The Pig (see accompanying photo). The Wildcats won The Pig the first two years and Forest Lake has claimed the porker the last two years. In addition to the trophy, Ranger head coach Joe Tomas actually roasts a pig. He started roasting the pig on Friday night and stayed the night in the Wildcat parking lot near the soccer field to tend to the roasting pig. Fans of both teams arriving for the game on Saturday were treated to free pulled pork sandwiches. The Press consumed one or two of the sandwiches (for research purposes only, like any good reporter would) and found them to be delicious. If you want a free pulled pork sandwich next year, you’ll need to head to Forest Lake for the game.
The Wildcats host the Becker Bulldogs tonight at 6 pm. at Chisago Lakes High School. Next Tuesday, September 17, they will head across deer-infested Highway 95 to play the Bluejackets at Cambridge-Isanti High School at 6 p.m.
