CL splits a pair of blowouts
Chisago Lakes 62, Cloquet 33
The Wildcats hammered the Lumberjacks in a section contest on Tuesday, December 10.
Finally over the illness that had plagued their team early in the season, the ‘Cats had their full complement of players and dominated from start to finish against Cloquet.
Alyssa Hempel had 11 points and 15 boards, Greta Gillach had 10 points and four assists, Lizzy Godden had 10 points, Emme Bjelland had nine and Jill Erickson had eight.
With the balanced offense, the real star of the night was Chisago Lakes’ defense, which held Cloquet to just 24 percent shooting and 29 turnovers.
“We've always played a tough schedule and missing those kids gave some opportunities to our juniors and sophomores who didn't see much, if any, court time last year,” Head Coach Craig Walker said. “And Alyssa Hempel is getting better every time out. Her offense is coming around and she's a good defender in the post for someone as slight as she is.”
Cambridge-Isanti 52, Chisago Lakes 39
In a role reversal, the Wildcats struggled against Cambridge-Isanti’s half court trap and the Bluejackets took advantage for some easy buckets and a big win in both team’s Mississippi 8 Conference opener.
“C-I is a good team loaded with experienced seniors,” Walker said. “As we mature this year and learn from our experiences, we'll continue to get better and this game will be closer and we'll be more competitive. We're still looking for kids to step up and contribute on both ends.”
Gillach again led CL with 16 pts on seven-of-nine shooting. Bjelland, Hempel and Jill Erickson each contributed six, with Hempel chipped in 11 rebounds.
