Vikes win first M8C tilt in two years
After only winning five games in 24 tries last year, the North Branch girls basketball team has already matched that total before Christmas this year.
Their extraordinary season rolled on with another win, this one their first in the Mississippi 8 Conference – where they went 0-8 last year.
The Vikings beat the Monticello Magic 58-50 behind 21 points from senior Megan Bunes and another double-double from Paige Peaslee.
“The girls did an outstanding job executing our game plan in our conference opener against Monticello,” Head Coach Alison Trampe said. “They have some big posts players so we knew we needed to limit their touches in the paint and rebound really well and we did an excellent job in both areas.”
With Peaslee under the weather most of the week, Bunes took the lead on offense, canning five three points on her way to her 21 points. She also grabbed seven rebounds, which is impressive from her guard spot.
“It was Megan’s best shooting performance of the year and she showed what an offensive threat she can be,” Trampe said.
Despite Peaslee’s 18 and 11, the Vikings still needed some big shots down the stretch from Maddie Helin, and she came through in the clutch. “We knew she had to step up, and she delivered,” Trampe said as Helin helped salt away the victory.
