CL gets first win of the season
Pine City 72, Chisago Lakes 68
Andrew Koehler dominated in Chisago Lakes’ tussle with Pine City on Monday, December 16, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Dragons’ three point shooting.
Koehler tallied 26 points and 18 boards, but Ethan Thompson was the only other Wildcat in double digits with 10 points.
Pine City was staked to an early lead by Koleman Lind, Seth Logan and Christian Fromm and enjoyed a 36-30 pad at halftime.
The ‘Cats were able to keep things close throughout the second half, but could never overcome Pine City, eventually losing 72-68. Noah Lasiuta had nine points, three rebounds and three assists. Beau Backes had six points, nine boards and three helpers.
Lind ended up with 26 points for PC, Fromm had 15 and Logan had 13.
St. Francis 47, Chisago Lakes 45
Their next match up was a bit more defensive oriented on Tuesday, December 17 at St. Francis.
Chisago Lakes scored only 16 points in the second half to allow the Saints to fight back and steal a Mississippi 8 Conference win.
The Wildcats had an early lead thanks to Koehler and Backes dominating on the inside. The duo combined for 30 points on the night, and CL enjoyed a 29-22 cushion at halftime.
In the second half, the offense went off the rails and CL couldn’t score at all. The 16 points were a season low for a half, and it allowed St. Francis to capitalize, as they pulled out the late, narrow win 47-45.
Koehler had another double-double, adding 12 rebounds with his 18 points. Backes had 12 points but no one else on the roster scored more than four.
Chisago Lakes 78, Cloquet 64
The offense got back on track when Chisago Lakes came home to face Cloquet on Thursday, December 19, and it paid off with the ‘Cats first victory of the year.
The Lumberjacks made a concerted effort to limit Koehler’s effectiveness on the inside, but the perimeter players stepped up for CL, and it led to a barrage of balanced scoring in the first half.
Chisago Lakes was up 41-28 at the break, and they kept Cloquet at bay in the second half.
Ryan Sanvik led the ‘Cats in scoring with 13. Grant Koehler and Thompson each had 12 points and Backes and Andrew Koehler each had 11. Koehler had 14 boards for another double-double. Backes had eight boards and three assists. Lasiuta had nine points, nine assists and five rebounds.
Nine players in all scored for Chisago Lakes, and those are the types of performances they need to win this season. If a team takes Koehler away, the shotmakers will have open looks.
Chisago Lakes will travel to Fergus Falls just after Christmas to take part in the annual holiday tournament up there. They’ll open with Morris and depending how they do will determined who they end up playing afterwards.
