Vikes get two lopsided shutouts
The Viking boys hockey team (7-2-0) gave themselves an early Christmas present of two big shutout wins over conference opponents, with a hat trick in each game.
North Branch 8, Becker/Big Lake 0
The Vikings blew open a close game with five goals in the second period, including a hat trick by Tucker Sachs, as they roared to an 8-0 shutout over the Becker/Big Lake Eagles Tuesday, December 17 at Chisago Lakes Arena.
Matt Dekanick scored the only goal of the first period to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Sachs scored early in the second to double the Viking margin. Joey Kerchner scored twice before Sachs scored two more times to make the Vikings 6-0. With a six-goal lead, the entire third period switched to running time. For those unaware of the concept of running time, it’s a sort of ‘mercy rule’ – when a Minnesota high school hockey team leads a game by six or more goals in the third period, the clock does not stop, for the most part.
The Vikings added goals by Jordan Axberg and Lawton Garin in the third period to make the final score 8-0. Cody Croal earned his second playmaker badge of the season with three assists. Ben Huth, Dekanick and Dawson Johnson had two assists apiece and Alex Langevin and Kerchner each assisted on one goal. The Vikings doubled up on shots on goal, piling up a 39-19 advantage over the Eagles. Viking goalie Jake Turek stopped all 19 shots he faced to pick up his second shutout of the season.
North Branch 7, Cambridge-Isanti 0
Just two nights after the win over Becker/Big Lake, Cody Croal unloaded his third hat trick of the season as the Vikings rolled over the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets at Isanti Arena.
Matt Dekanick and Tucker Sachs each scored in the first period to give the Vikings an early 2-0 lead. Croal and Jordan Axberg each added a power play goal in the second period. Croal scored twice just a minute apart midway through the third period to complete his hat trick, including once more on the power play. Dekanick added another goal late in the period to make the final score 7-0.
The Vikings outshot the Bluejackets 37-20 for the game as goalie Jake Turek picked up his second straight shutout and third overall this season. Axberg and Joey Kerchner had two assists apiece. Chipping in with one assist each were Croal, Dekanick, Alex Langevin, Sachs and Johnny Snaza.
