'Cats fall short at Herb Brooks
Herb Brooks Holiday Classic
The Wildcat boys’ hockey team played in the Silver Division of the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic – formerly known as the Schwan’s Cup – last weekend at the Super Rink in Blaine. They lost their first two games: 5-1 to Marshall and 4-3 to Eau Claire North. The Wildcat game scheduled for Saturday, December 28 against Minnehaha Academy was cancelled due to the extremely icy road conditions Saturday morning.
Marshall 5, Chisago Lakes 1
In a battle of big cats, the Marshall Tigers scored three goals in the first period and two more late in the second, cruising to a 5-1 win over the Wildcats in the opening game last Thursday. Shots were nearly even in this one, with the Tigers outshooting the Wildcats just 29-27. Wildcat Ryan Schmidt scored midway through the third period, assisted by Logan Mehlhorn and David Kimlinger, to spoil the shutout.
Eau Claire North 4, Chisago Lakes 3
With the score tied 3-3, Eau Claire North’s Joey Koller scored with just over two minutes left in the third period to give the Huskies a 4-3 win over the Wildcats last Friday. The Wildcats trailed 3-1 after two periods, but Ryan Schmidt scored twice early in the third period to tie the game.
After a scoreless first period, Ben Johnson scored an unassisted power play goal just 1:21 into the second period to put the Wildcats up 1-0. But the Huskies scored two goals late in the period to go up 2-1. It looked like Eau Claire was getting ready to pull away when they scored a minute into the third period to go up 3-1. But just under four minutes into the period, Schmidt scored, assisted by Alex Bachmeier, to cut the Husky lead to 3-2. And Schmidt tied it almost exactly three minutes later, with the assist going to Ben Jinks.
Tomorrow night, the Wildcats (3-6-0) will play their archrivals, the North Branch Vikings (9-3-0), at Chisago Lakes Arena at 7 p.m. The teams’ respective records appear to give the Vikings an advantage, but rivalry games tend to bring out the best in teams and this contest should be no exception.
On Saturday night, the Wildcats will play the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm at 6 p.m. at Chisago Lakes Arena.
Saturday is Chisago Lakes Hockey Alumni Day. After the girls’ game ends at 4 p.m. and before the boys’ game starts at 6 p.m., the Chisago Lakes High School hockey program will honor Chisago Lakes male and female players who played in college after their Wildcat hockey career was over. Kevin Baumgard led a permanent display project to honor those players. You can see the results in the lobby of the Chisago Lakes Arena.
