Gymnasts have a blast at state meet
Although none of the area gymnasts threatened to podium finish at the state tournament, they still had a great time and a great showing at the state gymnastics meet at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium on Saturday, February 22.
Claudia Stipe of Chisago Lakes competed in the all around and finish in 18th place overall. She had finishes of 27th on the vault, 30th on the uneven bars, 28th on the balance beam and 28th on the floor. They were good scores for Stipe, but this is the most presitgious meet of the year.
“Claudia was nervous, but she had a great vault and one of her higher scores of the season floor,” Head Coach Brett Kjos said. “she added a new skill on her uneven bars and we had a little trouble in that event. She nailed the new skill but was early on another move and fell. Otherwise it was a great routine!”
Wildcat Elsa Leopold also qualified in the balance beam, and she had the best finish of anyone, placing 18th in the event. “She was also very nervous but stuck her routine,” Kjos said. “It was great and exactly as she practiced all week. She was still shaking five minutes after she completed her routine though!”
For North Branch, Paige Bauer competed in vault and finished in 28th place with a score of 9.3125. Again, it was a high score for her, but with the level of competition, it was hard to break through to a higher tier.
