Chisago Lakes 7, North Branch 0
The Wildcats have been in charge of the Chisago County rivalry for quite some time, and this year was no different when they beat North Branch 7-0 on Thursday, September 10.
Chisago Lakes got wins from Greta Gillach, Emily Erickson, Lauryn Lundberg and Maddie Gamble in the singles matches, and Chloe Zupko, Jill Erickson, Jenna Lawry, Grace DeVries, Abby Sprado and Laine DeVries in doubles.
For North Branch, Carrie Hall put up a good fight at third singles and Rachel Wurdemann and Hailey Bistodeau lost 5-7, 5-7 to Lawry and DeVries in a close match.
The ‘Cats went on to sweep St. Francis after their county tangle was over with North Branch. They again won throughout the lineup with just Lauryn Lundberg at second singles and Sprado and Laine DeVries at third doubles facing much resistance. Lundberg won 6-4 in the first set before dropping the second set 5-7. She ended up winning the third set tiebreak 10-7 to take the point.
At third doubles, Sprado and DeVries fought off the SF pair to win 6-4, 6-4.
The Vikings have been up and down this year. They beat St. Francis 4-3 in a thrilling match up. They got wins from Chloe Moline and Miaya Volkman in singles, and Sophie Smith and Hollie Ohnsorg and Wurdemann and Bistodeau in the doubles half.
They have then lost three in a row, including the sweep to CL.
They dropped a match 2-5 to Cambridge-Isanti with the two doubles teams both earning points. Smith, Ohnsorg, Wurdemann and Bistodeau got the W’s.
Against Princeton, who is traditionally a very strong tennis program, the Vikings got just one point, coming from the racquets of Smith and Ohnsorg at first doubles.
Despite the recent losing streak, Head Coach Joel Santjer is staying positive that the girls are even playing at all. “We never know what the season will throw at us,” he said. “With a shortened season this year we have less time in competition, so we'll try to make the most of every match.”
Both teams had big matches earlier this week. The Wildcats played against Becker for what Head Coach Jon Erickson figured would be the de facto conference championship match. Becker came out on top 4-3, with full results and story in next week’s Chisago County Press.
North Branch broke their losing streak by clobbering Big Lake 6-1 earlier this week, with full results in next week’s paper also.
