Third time not a charm for North Branch as Chisago Lakes wins in sections

With the altered schedule this year, Chisago Lakes and North Branch had already played twice this year, and come section time, they squared off again, but the result was the same, with Chisago Lakes coming out on top 6-1.

The Wildcats swept the singles portion of the competition, and won at second and third doubles, with Hollie Ohnsorg and Sophie Smith at first doubles winning the only point for North Branch.

For Chisago Lakes, the wins came from Greta Gillach, Emily Erickson, Lauryn Lundberg and Maddie Gamble in singles. Each girl won their matches quickly over their North Branch counterpart.

Gillach won 6-0, 6-0 over Moline, Erickson won 6-4, 6-2 over Miaya Volkman, Lundberg won 6-0, 6-0 over Gemma Rossini and Gamble won 6-2, 6-2 over Carrie Hall.

In doubles, CL’s Jenna Lawry and Grace DeVries had a nice battle with Rachel Wurdemann and Hailey Bistodeau. The NB pair won the first set 6-4, but the Chisago Lakes’ tandem battled back to win the second and third set 6-3, 6-4.

The third doubles match also went to a third set. Chisago Lakes’ Abby Sprado and Laine DeVries won the first set 6-2, but Justine Joyal and Sophia Helinsky of North Branch held on in the second set and broke serve enough times to wint 6-4. But, Sprado and DeVries showed their experience edge in the third set and turned it up a notch for a 6-1 victory.

At the first doubles spot, Ohnsorg and Smith kept their nice season going. They went to a tiebreaker in the first set with Jill Erickson and Chloe Zupko and won 7-6 (7-5). The Viking duo then found their groove in the second set. They broke the CL serve three times en route to a 6-2 win.

The matches did get closer and closer as the two teams played each other more, but the gap remained a bit too large for North Branch to overcome.

Chisago Lakes, which earned the number two seed in the section, will now move on to face Andover. North Branch, who was the seven seed, will now face Forest Lake. Both games will be Thursday, October 8. They are getting another match since the regular season was limited and there is no state tournament or individual bracket.
