'Cats split two M8C matchups
Defense has been an issue for the Wildcats boys basketball team in the past, but with a low-post anchor in AJ Koehler and energetic coach Josh Flug in charge, things have looked stout this year.
There was no better example than their first half performance against Cambridge-Isanti. The ‘Cats only gave up 11 points in the opening stanza and had a huge 15 point lead at the break.
They kept the pressure on in the second half and only gave up 21 more points to hold the Jackets to 32 points in a 57-32 domination.
On the offensive end, it was a balanced attack that led CL. Reed Marquardt scored 14 points for CL and Koehler had 13 points. Everett Appleby chipped in 10 points, and Noah Lasiuta, Owen Larson, Patrick Rowe and Ryan Sanvik all hit big basketbals throughout. Koehler had another double-double, as he pulled down 13 boards. Marquardt added six steals, as he’s been a big catalyst to CL’s improved perimeter defense, and Sanvik added five assists, three steals and three rebounds.
St. Francis 58, Chisago Lakes 50
The ‘Cats had another strong defensive showing, but they couldn’t quite score enough points to get past St. Francis on Thursday, January 28.
Marquardt was again the leading scorer with 14 points, but they didn’t have anyone else in double figures, and that was their undoing. Koehler had nine points to go along with 16 rebounds.
Meanwhile, St. Francis, who had built a five point lead at halftime, got 23 points from Matthew Bothun and 18 from Cody Pennebaker.
The ‘Cats hosted Monticello earlier this week and will host Becker on Thursday, February 4. The Magic were 1-4 heading into the match up and Becker features a 5-1 record, so it will be a tough test late in the week.
