C-I cools down Wildcats
Chisago Lakes 3, Big Lake 1
Nick Overgaard had two 3goals and an assist to lead the Wildcats to a 3-1 win over the Big Lake Hornets Tuesday, February 23 at Chisago Lakes Arena. The Wildcats outshot the Hornets 28-22 for the game. Wildcat goalie Max Wilmer stopped 21 of the 22 shots he faced in picking up his eighth win of the season.
Overgaard scored the game’s first goal ten minutes into the second period, assisted by Nick Helland and Ryan Jinks. Helland put one in the net just over four minutes into the third period, assisted by Nate Bluhm and Overgaard. Overgaard sealed the win with a goal at 14:47 of the third period. Assists went to Helland and Kaleb Olson. The Hornets scored a power play goal a minute later, but it was too little, too late as the Wildcats won yet another low-scoring game.
Chisago Lakes 5, Mora/Milaca 4 (OT)
Blaine Klemz scored at 2:01 of overtime to complete his first hat trick of the season and give the Wildcats a 5-4 win over the alliterative Mora/Milaca Mustangs Tuesday, March 2 at the Mora Civic Center. Nick Overgaard, who had a goal and two assists in the game, assisted on the game winner. In his first career start, sophomore goalie Jack Hanson stopped 17 of the 21 shots he faced and picked up the win.
Overgaard scored with two minutes to go in the first period, assisted by Klemz, to tie the game at 1-1. The Mustangs scored three goals in the first six minutes of the second period to go up 4-1. But the Wildcats came roaring back, scoring three goals of their own in the second half of the period to tie the game at 4-4. Klemz scored a power play goal, assisted by Overgaard and Zach Walden. Two minutes later, Klemz scored again, assisted by Nate Bluhm and Walden. And with just under two minutes to go in the period, Karston Edson scored the tying goal, with Jacob Starkey picking up the lone assist, to tie things up. Neither team scored in the third period, setting the stage for the overtime heroics by Klemz.
Cambridge-Isanti 4, Chisago Lakes 3 (OT)
The Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets scored exactly three minutes into overtime to beat the Wildcats 4-3 Thursday, March 4 at Chisago Lakes Arena. The Bluejackets outshot the Wildcats 40-19 for the game. Wildcat goalie Jack Hanson stopped 36 of those 40 shots, include 19 of 20 in the third period alone.
The first period saw three goals scored in a two-minute burst. Nick Overgaard scored the game’s first goal, assisted by Kaleb Olson, at 6:12. A minute later, Cambridge tied it up with a power play goal. The Wildcats re-took the lead on Nick Helland’s goal at the eight-minute mark, assisted by Overgaard and Blaine Klemz. In the second period, the Bluejackets tied it at 2-2 with a power play goal at 4:47. But just 16 seconds later, Helland scored his second goal of the game to put the Wildcats up 3-2. Overgaard got the assist. The Bluejackets scored midway through the third period to tie game at 3-3 and send it into overtime.
Chisago Lakes 6, Pine City 3
Playmaker Nick Helland had a goal and four assists and Blaine Klemz scored twice and had two assists, leading the Wildcats to a 6-3 win over the Pine City Dragons Saturday, March 6 at the Pine City Civic Center. Pine City outshot the Wildcats 33-27 for the game. Wildcat goalie Jack Hanson stopped 30 of the 33 shots he faced to raise his record to 2-1 for the season.
Karston Edson got the Wildcats on the board just over a minute into the first period, assisted by Jacob Starkey and Nick Helland. Klemz scored midway through the first period, with assists going to Nick Overgaard and Helland, to double the Wildcat lead to 2-0. The Wildcat scoring train chugged along as Nik Jinks scored four minutes into the second period, assisted by Dylan Dassner and Drake Thyen. Dassner’s assist was the sophomore’s first career point. Overgaard extended the Wildcat lead to 4-0 with a goal at 9:34. Helland and Klemz got the assists.
The Dragons scored a power play goal just over a minute later to cut the lead to 4-1. But, with three minutes to go in the period, Helland made it 5-1, assisted by Overgaard and Klemz. Pine City scored twice in the first four minutes of the third period to cut the Wildcat lead to 5-3. With two minutes to go in the game, Klemz scored a power play goal to seal the 6-3 win for the Wildcats. Helland and Nate Bluhm assisted on the game’s final goal.
Wildcat head coach Cory Lushanko said “Jack Hanson has played great in the net the last three games and has a bright future ahead of him. He competed hard in every game and improved through each competition.”
Dodge County 3, Chisago Lakes 0
The Dodge County Wildcats beat the Chisago Lakes Wildcats 3-0 this past Monday, March 8 at Dodge County Ice Arena. Max Wilmer, fully healed from the injury that kept him out of the past three games, saved 33 of the 36 shots he faced.
The Wildcats, with an 8-3-1 conference record, are in second place behind Monticello in the Mississippi 8 Conference
The Wildcats (10-5-1) will head to the Hopkins Pavilion to take on the Class AA Hopkins Royals (6-9-0) tonight at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Wildcats welcome the Pine City Dragons (8-8-0) to Chisago Lakes Arena for a rematch and the season finale. The matinee will get underway at 2 p.m.
