Brown and Cartier state bound after alpine sections
Although their goal every year is to get their whole team to the state tournament, the Chisago Lakes alpine ski team did pretty well for themselves sending a pair of skiers to the biggest race in the state.
Augie Brown on the boys side finished in second place and punched his ticket to the state tournament, and Megan Cartier came in fifth place to earn her way to the state tourney as well.
The girls were not far off of securing a state tournament berth as a whole, finishing in second place in the Section 7 meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik on Tuesday, March 2.
Cartier was the pace setter, finishing in fifth place overall with a time of 1:23.10.
Elsa Dahl was the next Wildcat to registert a score, and she had an amazing run on the Helsinki course, finishing in sixth place. That, paired with her 17th on the Innsbruck course, earned her 10th place overall in the meet.
Megan Adams came in 14th place with a time of 1:26.16. She also fared much better on the Helsinki course, finishing in eighth place after a 17th on the Innsbruck course.
Annah Mellum rounded out CL’s varsity score with a 24th place finish with a time of 1:30.66.
The totals added up to 179 points for the Wildcats, just 20 points behind section champion Duluth East.
Cook County finished in third place with 166 points.
On the boy’s end of the race, Brown was their top finisher in second place. He came in third on the Innsbruck course with a time of 38.89 seconds and third on the Helsinki course with a time of 36.12 seconds. The consistency boosted him up to second place overall with a total time of 1:15.01.
Gavin Bodin put together the next best individual finish with an eighth place on the Helsinki course, but a stumble on Innsbruck cost him a top finish.
Their next best skier was Will Hennen, who had two strong runs. He finished in 18th place on the Innsbruck course and then jumped up to 13th place on the Helsinki course to finish in 15th overall with a time of 1:21.26.
Tyler Drury had a strong section debut finishing in 28th place with a combined time of 1:28.21. Josh Goulet finished up Chisago Lakes’ scoring for varsity with a 35th place finish with a time of 1:33.56.
The boys ended up finishing in sixth place overall with 140 points.
Duluth East was the dual champions when they also won the boys portion of the event with 182 points, just edging out Andover, who had 176 points.
The state tournament took place on Wednesday, March 10, after the Chisago County Press deadline. Check out next week’s edition to see how Brown and Cartier fared.
