Wildcats split conference games with end of season in sight
Chisago Lakes 12, Monticello 2 (5 innings)
The Wildcats pounded out 12 hits and scored 12 runs to crush the Monticello Magic 12-2 Tuesday, May 18 at Monticello. The game was shortened to five innings because of the ten-run rule. The Wildcats scored four runs in the first inning, three in the third and piled on five in the fourth. Four Wildcats had two hits each – Leah Zaruba, Haley Sogard, Anya Nephew and Chloe Zupko. Nephew and Leah Zaruba each had a double. Nephew drove in three runs, and Sogard, Brooklyn Nelson and Hailey Benjamin had two RBIs each. Ashley Mandell started and went three innings. She allowed two earned runs on three hits, walked two and struck out five. Anna Zaruba pitched the final two innings. She didn’t allow a hit and struck out one Magic batter.
Becker 5, Chisago Lakes 2
The Becker Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning – two unearned – to take a 4-2 lead, and went on to beat the Wildcats 5-2 Thursday, August 20 at Becker. Ashley Mandell started and took the complete game loss. She five runs – three earned – on eleven hits, walked three and struck out ten.
In the bottom of the second inning, the first Becker batter doubled, continued to third on an error and scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0 in favor of the Bulldogs. In the top of the third, Greta Gillach was hit by a pitch with one out and scored n a double by Leah Zaruba to tie the game at 1-1. Zaruba went to third on a groundout by Ashley Mandell and scored on an error by the catcher to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs on an error, a single and a walk. One out later, a single drove in two runs. A groundout to first drove in another and Becker led 4-2. The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 5-2. The Wildcat offense went largely silent after the third inning, managing just three baserunners over the final four innings of the game.
The Wildcats (14-3-1) will end their regular season tonight at 5 p.m. at home against the Princeton Tigers at 5 p.m.
The Wildcats are fifth in the state in the Class AAA QRF rankings. Section 7AAA playoffs begin next Wednesday, June 2. The Wildcats, who will most likely be seeded first, will most likely play today’s opponent, the Princeton Tigers in the opening game. The time is TBD.
