CL Bulldogs drop two despite some big time at-bats
St. Francis 10, Chisago Lakes 8
The St. Francis Silverbacks broke an 8-8 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth to beat the Bulldogs 10-8 on Wednesday, June 2 at Chisago Lakes High School.
Dusty Rhodes’ three-run double off wall in left center gave the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. After St. Francis scored to tie the game in the top of the fourth, Derrick Kluge singled to drive in Tanner Marquardt in the bottom of the inning to put the Bulldogs up 4-3. But the wheels came off for the Bulldogs in the top of the fifth as the Silverbacks turned four hits, a hit batter and two errors into five runs to take an 8-4 lead.
Hunter Lindstrom came in to relieve starter Tyler Stilp in the top of the sixth and held St. Francis scoreless for the next three innings. The Bulldogs scored four times in the bottom of the sixth on three hits and three errors, tying the game at 8-8. In the top of the ninth, a hit batter and a double put runners on second and third with one out. The next batter singled to right center to drive in two runs. In the bottom of the inning, Riley Berner walked, and Tyler Stilp singled to put runners on first and second with one out. But Logan Bjorkman and Max McDonough struck out to end the game.
Mora 6, Chisago Lakes 3
The Bulldogs have generally struggled when they travel to Mora to play the Blue Devils. Last Sunday, June 6, they made a game out of it, but still lost 6-3. The Bulldog defense was significantly better than in the league opener, but a critical error in the fourth inning cost the Bulldogs two runs and the lead. Hunter Lindstrom pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs in taking the loss.
Miles Turk singled to lead off the top of the second inning, and Zane Brophy followed with a double to left center to put runners on first and second. Dylan Magnuson singled up the middle to drive in the first run of the game, and Cole Hentges drove in a run with a groundout to put the Wildcats up 2-0. Mora scored single runs in the second and third innings to tie the game at 2-2. Each run was driven in by a single that came after two hit batters. In the bottom of the fourth, a single and error by shortstop Miles Turk put runners on first and second with one out. With two outs, the Mora batter hit a foul popup toward third base. Third baseman Tyler Stilp settled under the popup but dropped it to keep the inning alive. The batter then doubled to right center to drive in two runs and put the Blue Devils up 4-2.
In the top of the fifth, Logan Bjorkman led off with a single, went to second on an error, went to third on a wild pitch and scored when Jeremy Knutson reached on an error to cut the Mora lead to 4-3. Mora added a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-3. In the bottom of the sixth, the first Blue Devil batter hit a popup down the right field line in foul territory. First baseman Derrick Kluge chased the popup and caught it as he crashed headfirst into the chain link fence. Kluge’s sunglasses took a beating, but he was okay and held on to the ball. Later in the inning, with a runner on first and one out, the batter hit a grounder just to the left of second. Turk grabbed the ball, stepped on second and threw low to first, where Kluge dug it out of the dirt to end the inning. Mora shut down the Bulldogs the rest of the way and added a run in the eighth to make the final score Mora 6, Chisago Lakes 3.
The Bulldogs (0-2 league, 0-4 overall) will head up to Hibbing this Saturday for a game against the Hibbing Miners at 3:30 p.m. Next Wednesday, June 15, the Wildcats will host the East Bethel Bandits at 7:30 p.m. at Chisago Lakes High School..
