Erickson heads to state, first in nearly 20 years for CL
Chisago Lakes’ senior Jill Erickson will be heading to the state tournament after putting together two strong rounds in the Section 7AAA meet at Hinckley Grand National course.
Erickson shot an 82 in the opening round, and then did plenty in her second round to qualify for the last state spot shooting an 86. She was six strokes clear of the next girl, Mya VanKuyk of St. Michael-Albertville. Erickson became the first Chisago Lakes lady golfer since Jennifer Waters in 2003 to qualify for the state tournament.
As a team, the girls were paired with Cambridge-Isanti and Andover for day one and shot a girls golf program record low of 354. Erickson led the team with 82, Haley Overgaard had an 87, Emily Erickson scored a 91, Grace Devries matched her career best 94, Lily Fasbender shot a 108 and Kali Jo Hanson finished with a 113.
With the ‘Cats on the outside looking in at the top three teams, they didn’t get to come back as a whole for day two, but Jill Erickson’s score, as well as Overgaard’s were good enough to get them to the second day.
Day Two was a very hot day for golf on Saturday, June 5. Overgaard battled the heat to card an 89 for a two-day combined score of 176 and an 11th place finish in the section. She gained some really valuable experience and will return next spring.
To remain in fifth place and be the first girl golfer from Chisago Lakes in 20 years to go to the state tournament, Erickson needed to play 18 holes of good golf. She finished the difficult front nine with a 41, and the back in 45 to card an 86 and finish the day in fifth place, qualifying to play in the state tournament.
The state meet will be held on June 15-16 at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids.
