Wildcats get huge win, beat crosstown rival NB
by JEFF NORTONIt has been years since the Chisago Lakes volleyball team beat their cross county rival in North Branch, but they shook the monkey off their back on Thursday, September 16 in a Mississippi 8 Conference match up against the Vikings.
Chisago Lakes 3, North Branch 1
The Vikings came out blazing in the first set. Outside hitter Lindsey Bunes, as well as Rylee Ramberg and Lydia Kuhlman were firing on all cylinders, pacing the Vikings to a 25-14 set win to set what they thought would be the tone for the night.
But, Chisago Lakes didn’t fold up shop and go home for the night. They battled back to win the second set 25-19 to even things up.
They jumped out to a lead after winning the third set 25-21, and then they finished off the match with a hard-fought 26-24 win in the fourth set to win their first match against North Branch in eight years.
For CL’s side, Ashley Peltier and Kalley Vugteveen payed very well in the middle. Mikayla Grandaw had a nice match setting for the ‘Cats in their 3-1 win.
For North Branch, Bunes had 14 kills, Kuhlman had seven and Ramberg had eight. Lauren Hicks added six kills and two aces. Maddie Helin had four kills, eight digs and 29 assists for NB.
The win moved North Branch to 7-4 on the year and Chisago Lakes to 5-1. The ‘Cats will take on Becker this week before playing in back to back home games next week They’ll play hom against Anoka on Monday, September 27, home against St. Francis on Tuesday, September 28.
For North Branch, they’ll host Princeton on Tuesday, September 28 before traveling to Becker on Thursday, September 30.
