Wildcats looking good heading towards section play in tennis

Chisago Lakes 7, Big Lake 0
The Wildcats’s girls tennis team ran through the Big Lake Hornets last week as they look sharp with section play coming up.

Every spot in the lineup won by straight sets, and none of them were particularily close.

Wins came from Greta Gillach, Emily Erickson, Addie Carlson, Alivia Clasen at singles and the teams of Lauryn Lundberg and Kaitlyn Hanson, Laine DeVries and Kayla Bluhm and Ellie Hilber and Audra Behnke in doubles.

Chisago Lakes 4, Andover 3
The Wildcats swept the singles portion of their match up against section opponent Andover, and that was just enough to win the match for them.

Gillach, Erickson and Carlson got quick wins in the top three singles spots while Andover claimed all three doubles spots pretty quickly.

The match came down to Clasen, who is only a freshman, playing a senior from Andover at fourth singles. Clasen had won the first set 6-4 before Katie Evans won the second set convinvingly 6-2. Clasen should determination beyond her years to put that set quickly in her rearview mirror and dominate in the third set tiebreaker, 7-0 to win her match and the match for the team.

“Alivia recently cracked the lineup and she has played very well for us,” Head Coach Jon Erickson said.

Hibbing 4, Chisago Lakes 3
CL fell to a tough Hibbing team on in what could be a section previe match as well. Two of the matches went to three sets, and they were split between the two teams, so the result could definitely be different if the squads meet again. Gillach ran over her opponent 6-1, 6-0, and Erickson won going away, 6-3, 6-4 at second singles. Hibbing took the third and fourth singles points, but Calrson played a close match at third singles, losing 6-7, 4-6.

In doubles, DeVries and Bluhm won in three sets after dropping the first set, and Hilber and Behnke won the first set 6-1 before falling 3-6, 6-10 in the second and third sets, and that ended up being the difference in the match as Hibbing won the first doubles spots and the match.

“Greta and Emily have been so consistently good this year for us,” Erickson said. “And freshman sensation Addie Carlson is right on track as well, playing great.”
