Falling dominoes starting with St. Thomas Academy lead to Schmidt leaving as Viking AD
by JEFF NORTONOn the field of competition, private schools are usually looked at a bit sideways by public schools and their fans. Now, a big change at St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights eventually hit the North Branch athletic program.
Now former Viking Activities Director Andrea Schmidt rannounced her resignation in mid-October effective October 21. She will be moving on to be the new AD at her alma mater, Roseville High School.
Roseville’s mid-year opening was created when their director, Reed Hornung, left to become St. Thomas’s new chief of activities. The vacancy at St. Thomas was created when their AD, Greg May was named the mens hockey coach at Augsburg College.
Schmidt, who had been at North Branch for just over a year, was sad to leave North Branch, but excited to be going back to where she started.
“Though I regret having to leave such a great school district, I was offered the Activities Director position at my alma mater and couldn't pass up the opportunity to return home,” she said. “I am so appreciative of the time I spent at North Branch Area Public Schools and the students and families I was privileged to serve, and I will miss them all!”
Early reports are that North Branch’s AD Administrative Assistant Kindra Helin, who has been in that spot for some time, was promoted to to be the new Activities Director for NB.
The North Branch Activities Director has been a revolving door at times since Becky Leuer retired in 2009. This will be NB’s seventh AD in the last 13 years. The longest stretches were Brett Carlson and Matt Lattimore at four years each. Both are still within the district in different positions, although Carlson departed for a year to be the AD at Lakeville North before returning as Comm Ed Director in North Branch. Lattimore is now an Assistant Principal at the middle school.
Mike Cunningham took over from Leuer and lasted one year before moving on to Spring Lake Park and then Elk River as their activity director. Corey McKinnon was AD for one year in 2015 before leaving to become Forest Lake’s Community Education Director.
