Gillach and Erickson win one before bowing out
Greta Gillach and Emily Erickson looked unstoppable in their first set of the state girls tennis tournament on Thursday, October 28 at the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota.
They broke Woodbury’s Brittany and Ashley Nguyen’s serve multiple times and swept the sisters 6-0 to win their first set of the tourney.
Things got a little tighter in the second set, as the Nguyen sisters were able to hold their serve, but Gillach and Erickson still ended up prevailing, winning 7-5 in a much tighter match.
That set the senior and junior pair up with the third-seeded pair from Mounds View in the second round. Molly Austin and Katerina Smiricinschi. The pair had a combined record of 52-10 on the year playing the biggest schools in the state, and there was a reason they were seeded so high.
The Mustang pair won the first set over Gillach and Erickson 6-1, and although the Wildcat team battled a bit more in the second set, they still fell 6-4 to Austin and Smiricinschi.
The Mounds View pair tasted a lot of success that week in tennis. They eventually finished in third place in the individual bracket, falling to the second-seeded team from Rochester Century and beating the fifth-seeded Minnetonka pair in the third place game.
The Mustang pair was also on Mounds View’s third place winning team in the Class AA team championships.
