Wildcats' offense firing; run into tough Blaine team

Chisago Lakes 5, Northern Tier 0
Dani Brunette picked up a Gordie Howe hat trick – a goal, an assist, and a fight (well, a roughing penalty, at least) – to lead the Wildcats to a 5-0 shutout of the Northern Tier Stars Tuesday, December 7 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  The Wildcats outshot the Stars 34-25 for the game, and Wildcat goalie Brianna Ritter stopped all 25 shots she faced to earn her first career shutout.

Brunette actually scored two goals in the game.  After a scoreless first period, Brunette scored at 1:43 of the second period, assisted by Syd Kerkow, to put the Wildcats up 1-0.  Nora DeVries scored just 21 seconds later to double the lead to 2-0.  Brunette and Laine DeVries picked up the assists.  At 14:36 of the period, Laine DeVries scored a power play goal, with the assist going to Dani Burgen, to make the score 3-0.  36 seconds later, Kayla Bluhm scored a power play goal, assisted by Laine DeVries, to make it 4-0 after two periods.  Brunette added an unassisted shorthanded goal less than two minutes into the third period to make it 5-0.

Chisago Lakes 14, Princeton 0
The Princeton Tigers certainly didn’t live up to their powerful nickname, suffering a 14-0 shellacking at the hands of the Wildcats Thursday, December 9 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  Dani Burgen scored four goals to pick up her third hat trick of the season, and also had three assists.  Since both teams are members of the Mississippi 8 Conference, the Wildcats and Tigers play twice per year.  Last year, the Wildcats outscored the Tigers 19-2 in their two matchups.  The Wildcats outshot the Tigers 65-10 for the game, scoring on five of six power play opportunities.  Goalie Brianna Ritter picked up her second career shutout.

Olivia Rambosek and Molly Eickman each scored their first career goal in this game.  Dani Brunette and Tianna Ritter each had a goal and three assists. Kayla Bluhm picked up three points with a goal and two assists, and Brooke Klemz and Nora DeVries each scored two goals.  Lauren Schmidt scored a shorthanded goal.  Laine DeVries had two assists, and Rilee Winters rounded out the scoring with one assist.

Blaine 6, Chisago Lakes 2
The Class AA Blaine Bengals came bursting out of the gates in the first period, outshooting the Wildcats 15-4 and scoring four times to take a 4-0 lead after one period.  The Wildcats outshot the Bengals 22-9 for the rest of the game, but only found the back of the net twice, and the Bengals headed out of Lindstrom with a 6-2 win Saturday December 11.  Dani Brunette scored with about three minutes left in the second period, assisted by Laine DeVries, to spoil the shutout.  Laine DeVries scored with 90 seconds left in the game, assisted by Kayla Bluhm, to make the final score 6-2  Shelby Sandberg had four goals and an assist for Blaine, and her teammate Kaitlin Ronn had four assists.

Hockey Hullaballoo
Dani Burgen is tied for third in the state with 20 goals, and her 32 total points put her in a tie for fifth place.  Dani Brunette’s 14 assists put her in a tie for eighth in that category.
Three Wildcats are now committed to D-1 hockey programs beyond their high school careers.  Senior Brunette is headed to UMD next year, officially signing this fall.  Senior Burgen, originally committed to Minnesota State at Mankato, is also headed to UMD, also officially signing this fall.  The two Danis will join former Chisago Lakes teammate Jenna Lawry, currently a freshman at UMD.  Junior Laine DeVries unofficially committed to St. Thomas this past summer.  Senior Rilee Winters, a former D-1 commit, is also expected to receive D-1 offers.

The Wildcats will play three straight home games as they head into the Christmas break.  On Saturday, they will welcome the Mound Westonka White Hawks, ranked fourth in Class A, to town for a 1 p.m. matinee.
