Vikes run into section and conference buzzsaws after beating Rush City

North Branch had a great start going into the season, sporting a 4-1 record after topping Rush City Tuesday, December 14, but back-to-back blowout losses to very tough teams from Monticello and Grand Rapids has shown the Vikings they have some work to do to make noise once the postseason rolls around.

North Branch 48, Rush City 40
North Branch’s trademark defense was on full display against Rush City, as the Tigers only mustered 40 points in the face of pressure.

On offense, the combination of Paige Peaslee and Ella Kuhlman were effective yet again, and were joined by Chloe Lattimore in this game. The trio did just enough, scoring 41 of NB’s 48 points to hold off the Tigers.

Monticello 62, North Branch 20
It was just one of those nights for the North Branch girls on Thursday, December 16.

Monticello absolutely controlled and befuddled the North Branch offense in the first half and the Vikings were colder than a February wind guage in Minnesota.
It all led to a demoralizing 44-3 deficit at halftime for North Branch.

They stayed with Monticello in the second half, but it obviously wasn’t enough to come back from such a hole. Ella Kuhlman led the way with seven points for NB.

Grand Rapids 58, North Branch 31
The Lady Vikings played one of the top teams in the section in Grand Rapids on Saturday, December 18.

North Branch had another slow start, only scoring 13 points in the first half while Taryn Hamling led the Thunderhawks to 28 points in the opening half.
North Branch’s offense didn’t get much better in the second half, scoring only 18 points.

Rapids kept their offensive pressure on, and eventually ran away with the 27 point win at 58-31.

Hamling led all scorers with 20 points. North Branch’s top scorer was Peaslee, who netted 12 points to go along with nine boards and two steals.
Kuhlman had nine points and six boards.
