North Branch continues hot start on the court

After winning only two games all of last year, the North Branch boys basketball team is on a roll to start their season, as they went 2-0 last year and upped their record to 4-1.

North Branch 68, Cloquet 59
The Vikings made a statement on Thursday, December 16, besting section foe Cloquet 68-59 and making their case as one of the best teams in the section.
Trevor Johnson led the Vikings with 25 points, and they got a balanced offense outside of that with Carson Klein scoring 14, Logan Murphy dropping 12 and Adam Rehm chipping in 11.

That balanced output helped the Vikings grow their three point halftime lead and win by nine. The Lumberjacks, who were 3-2 coming into the game, were one of the top teams, along with Hibbing, in Section 7AAA.

North Branch 88, Hill Murray 63
The Vikings hosted Hill Murray on the very next day and although they could’ve used a two games-in-two days excuse, they absolutely throttled the Pioneers in the first half and cruised to an easy 25 point victory.

Rehm and Johnson were the offensive stars for North Branch in this one, with Rehm pouring in 26 points and Johnson scoring 21. Andrew Thauwald chipped in nine points and Murphy added eight.

The Vikings will squeeze in one more game before Christmas break. They traveled to Pine City on Tuesday to take on the Dragons, before making a long trek to Hermantown on Thursday, December 23 for a showdown with the Hawks.

Hermantown sits at 3-2 and will be another team to watch in the section, and if the Vikings can beat them, it will be another huge step for Head Coach Todd Dufault and the rest of the North Branch program.

Johnson is leading the Vikings, with 22 points per game, but at different times, secondary scorers have stepped up in a big way. Rehm is averaging 13.8 points, Klein is at 9.2, Murphy at 8.0, Schoeberl at 7.5 and Thauwald at 7.0 points per game.
