'Cats conquer Hilltoppers

Chisago Lakes 6, Duluth Marshall 3
Tied 2-2 with Duluth Marshall after two periods, the Wildcats exploded for three goals in the first two minutes of the third period and went on to beat the Hilltoppers 6-3 Tuesday, December 21 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  The Wildcats outshot the Hilltoppers 47-36 for the game.  Wildcat goalie Zach Carlson, making just his second start of the season, stopped 33 of the 36 shots he faced to pick up the win.

Ben Jinks opened the scoring with a goal at 13:09 of the first period, assisted by Cam Stangl and Nick Helland.  The lead didn’t last long, as the Hilltoppers scored just nine seconds after the ensuing faceoff to tie the game at 1-1.  Marshall took its only lead of the game with a goal at 7:01 of the second period to go up 2-1.  This time, the Wildcats answered quickly.  Stangl scored at 8:26 to tie the score at 2-2, with assists going to Helland and Ryan Schmidt.

Schmidt scored 59 seconds into the third period, assisted by Helland and Stangl, to put the Wildcats up 3-2.  Dylan Dassner scored 27 seconds later, with Nate Bluhm picking up the assist.  Schmidt scored again about 40 seconds later, again assisted by Helland and Stangl, and the Wildcats had taken control of what had been a close game.  Ashton Edson scored an unassisted goal at the eight-minute mark to put the Wildcats up 6-2.  The Hilltoppers scored with just over a minute to go in the game to make the final 6-3.
The Wildcats’ top line of Schmidt, Helland, and Stangl combined for eleven points in this game.

Forest Lake 3, Chisago Lakes 2
Ryan Schmidt scored two power play goals against the Forest Lake Rangers,  His second goal pulled the Wildcats within one goal with over 14 minutes left in the third period, but the Rangers held off the Wildcats for the rest of the period and skated away with a 3-2 win.  The game was played at the Forest Lakes Sports Center this past Tuesday, December 28.

The Rangers opened the scoring with a goal at 4:06 of the first period.  Schmidt scored almost exactly at the midpoint of the period, assisted by Nick Helland, to tie the game at 1-1.  It looked like the teams would go into the first intermission tied, but Forest Lake scored with 13 seconds left in the period to go up 2-1.  Neither team scored in the second period.  The Rangers scored just 21 seconds into the third period double their lead.  Schmidt scored his second goal two and a half minutes later, with the assist going to Nate Bluhm, to cut the score to 3-2.  But that was as close as the Wildcats would get.

Hockey Hullaballoo
Schmidt is still among the top scorers in the state.  He is tied for fifth in goals, with 16, and tied for seventh in total points with 28.

The Wildcats (7-2-1) don’t play again until a week from tonight, when they will head to Isanti Ice Arena to take on the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets at 7 p.m.
