'Cats struggle to keep up with Monticello

Monticello 93, Chisago Lakes 83
The Monticello Magic are by far the most talented team in the Mississippi 8 Conference in swimming and diving, and they showed it in a drubbing of Chisago Lakes that saw them swim the last four events in exhibition.

“We swam good times and had pretty good diving but its hard to be competitive with Monticello,” Head Coach Ellen Heath said. “We have some key competitors out sick or just recovering from an illness, but they outraced us in some of our strongest events — sprints, backstroke, breaststroke —  and our weaker events. We just couldn't be competitive.”
Usually, CL’s diving at least gets them close if they had fallen behind, but Monticello had built a 49-13 lead at that point, with only Vincent Adams in the 200 freestyle avoiding a 1-2-3 sweep from the Magic.

And even once they got to the diving, CL typically pencils in the top three spots in the standings with two time defending state champion Storm Opdahl, and Jimmy Nord and Tobie Stiles, who finished second and third at the state meet last year, but Monticello has very good divers this year as well, and they were able to claim and third and fourth place, not far behind Nord and Opdahl. Stiles came in fifth place.

“Storm and Jimmy dove well and Vince Adams and Nick Olson both swam well,” Heath said after the meet. “We keep practicing hard with an eye on the end of the season. We are in a different section this year so some of our training and strategy is changing as well.”
