South St. Paul Triangular As anticipated, Andrew Novack (138) reached the 100-career victory milestone during the triangular at South St. Paul last Wednesday, January 12. He pinned Mahtomedi’s Alex Lavalle at 1:08 for his 99th win, and pinned Caelan Stroud of South St. Paul ten seconds quicker to claim win number 100. The Wildcats split the triangular, beating Mahtomedi 48-27 and losing to South St. Paul 61-18. Owen Morley (126), Reed Bleymeyer (160), Myia Teeselink (170), Logan Bender (195) and Chuck Gilman (220) all won by fall against their Mahtomedi opponents. Hayden Trupe (152) and Bender both pinned their South St. Paul opponents. Becker Triangular At the Becker Triangular last Friday, January 14, the Wildcats were crushed by the hosts 72-3 in the opening dual, with Logan Bender’s 6-4 decision over Becker’s Dylan Weber giving the Wildcats their only points. But in the nest dual, the Wildcats were tied with the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm 39-39 after all the matches were completed. Tiebreaking criteria rewarded the Wildcats the deciding point and they came away with a 40-39 win. The Wildcats trailed 30-0 before Andrew Novack (138) and Brycen Morley (145) both pinned their opponents at 48 and 49 seconds, respectively, to cut the Storm lead to 30-12. After Hayden Trupe lost a decision at 152 and the Wildcats took a forfeit at 160, the Storm led 39-12. But the Wildcats won the last five matchups of the day. Stephen Weiss (170) won by pin at 2:34, Connor Frederixon (182) toughed out a 6-4 decision, Logan Bender (195) took just 40 seconds to pin his opponent, and William Naatz won by forfeit to cut the Sauk Rapids lead to 39-33. In the 285-pound match, Chuck Gilman pinned the Storm’s Cameron Smith at 3:14 to tie the score at 39-39. The tiebreakers were then applied. The teams were even on Tiebreaker Criteria A through E, but the Wildcats prevailed on Tiebreaker Criterion F and won the dual 40-39. St. Croix Lutheran Tournament The Wildcats had their best showing in a tournament so far this season, finishing third in the sixteen-team St. Croix Lutheran Invitational on Saturday, January 15. The Wildcats had two individual champions for the day – Andrew Novack (132) and Logan Bender (195). Novack pinned Kaden Felde of Ogilvie at 1:17 to take the crown, and Bender pinned Jaehoo Choo of Ogilvie at 1:25 to win the championship in his weight class.
