Wildcats trample Vikings in tennis match up

Chisago Lakes 7, North Branch 0
Chisago Lakes made quick work of their county rival when they hosted North Branch on  Tuesday, May 3.

All seven points were won in straight sets by the Wildcats, with Abe Olson, Jack Hanson, Rhivers Sauter and Will Walker highlighting the wins at singles.

At doubles, Briar Burds, Gavin Michalek, Will Hennen, Jacob Peterson, Caleb Brink and Collin Dunleavy all were a part of straight set wins for the ‘Cats.

Cambridge-Isanti 4, Chisago Lakes 3
The Wildcats narrowly lost to the Bluejackets late last week, with the match coming down to a third set singles game that went C-I’s way.
Walker was the lone singles point for Chisago Lakes, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Phillip Yerigan.

In doubles action, Hennen and Peterson won their second doubles spot 6-4, 6-2, and Nolan Levasseur and Brink dominated at third doubles, winning 6-1, 6-3.

The Bluejackets won in straight sets at first and second singles, as well as first doubles, leaving Sauter as the last match. The youngster had lost the first set 6-4 before rebounding to win the second set by a similar 6-4 score.

In the third set, his opponent, Micah Gustafson, had some nice shots and was just able to get a leg up on Sauter with two break points and ended up winning the match, which gave C-I their fourth point and the win. It was a tough learning experience for Sauter, but one that will make him better as he grows in his career.

Centennial 6, Chisago Lakes 1
The Wildcats took a step up in a competition, facing the Centennial Cougars, and they were beaten 6-1 bu the tough team.

Sauter paired with Peterson to get a nice win over the second doubles team of Centennial, but that was the only point the ‘Cats would get. The pair won 5-7, 6-2, 10-4.

Pine City 5, North Branch 2
Drake Mellon and Wyatt Helberg got North Branch’s two points in their tough loss to Pine City last week.

The Dragons won first and second singles and swept the doubles spots, giving them five points and the win over NB.

Mellon’s performance was impressive at third singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win. At four singles, Helberg won 7-6 (7-5) 6-4, in a tight affair.

Cloquet 5, North Branch 2
Helberg won his second match in a row, topping Marco Zegan of Cloquet at fourth singles in NB’s 5-2 loss to the Lumberjacks.

Helber won another tight first set 7-6 (7-5) before cruising in the second set 6-1.

Alex Tribbett and Camron Moriarty got the Vikings’ other point with a 6-1, 7-6 (6-1) win at three doubles.

St. Francis 4, North Branch 3
The Vikings couldn’t quite get over the hump against St. Francis in their Mississippi 8 contest late last week.

Mellon got NB’s lone win in singles and Gabe Wurdemann and Brock Peterson won at one doubles, with Michael Thao and Zack Rustan winning at three doubles.

But, St. Francis claimed a tight affair at three singles, with Oluwanifemi Deen beating Helberg 6-3, 6-7 (4-6), 10-3 to seal the match. It was the last match on the court and was hotly contested throughout.
