Underclassmen star in North Branch's girls true team section win
True Team Section Meet
The North Branch girls track and field team had great performances up and down the lineup at the true team section meet in Cloquet on Tuesday, May 10, and they came almost exclusively from underclassmen.
The true team format requires a bit more depth than a standard track meet, and the fact that they won it with as many youngsters as they did speaks to a bright present and an even brighter future.
First place finishes came from Sophia Thorsen in the 400 meter dash, Ella Kuhlman in the 300 meter hurdles and two relay teams. Thorsen is a seventh grader and Kuhlman is a freshman.
The 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams that won typically feature Thorsen, Ella Dick, Sophia Benedict, Kuhlman and Dakota Esget.
Esget and Thorsen ended up being the stars on the track side for NB. Esget got a third place in the 100 meter dash, fifth place in the 200 meter dash and second place in the 400 meter dash. Thorsen got the win in the 400, sixth in the 200 and 7th in the 100.
Shaeyna Andreotti also showed off her hurdling prowess, finishing second in the 100 and 300 hurdles.
In the field events, Asaysha Olson had a great meet, coming in second in the long jump, third in the high jump and fourth in the triple jump. Avery Smith, Madison Whitman, and Lauren Hicks also had good finishes that helped the score. Hicks had top ten finishes in both throwing events, including a third in the shot put.
Ella Dick finished second in pole vault and Brooke Giese came in sixth.
North Branch ended up needing nearly every point as they barely got the win, scoring 582 points. They just narrowly beat out host Cloquet, who had 575 points.
The girls will move on to the true team state meet at Stillwater High School on Friday and Saturday, May 20-21 to compete against the best teams in Class AA in a format that is a bit more “true” than even the state meet in June.
The boys had a nice showing too, coming in third place in the meet.
They had multiple top five finishes, but an individual win eluded them.
Logan Murphy came in second place in the high jump, third place in the 400 meter dash and eighth place in the 100 meter dash.
Carson Weber finished third in the triple jump, followed by Nik Bovitz in fifth place. Bovitz also got a fifth in the long jump. Carson Klein scored a sixth place finish in the high jump, and Zach Johnson and Eric Flor went sixth-seventh in the pole vault.
Jackson Marcussen finished 10th in discus and fourth in the shot put event, and two of the relay teams, the 4x200 and 4x400, earned top five spots in fourth and fifth.
