'Cats move on to section finals

After scoring a first round bye with the second seed, Chisago Lakes hosted Blaine last week in a rematch of last year’s section finals game.

The programs went in two different directions this year, as CL was ranked second in the section and Blaine was the sixth seed.

“We knew Blaine would have redemption on their mind from last year so we prepared to face whatever they brought with them,” Head Coach Mark Nordby said in prep for the game.

The contest started out fairly even with the two teams exchanging goals early.

At the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats led 4-2.

“We had scouted a few of their players and knew they had the talent to put some in.  We challenged our defensive poles and middies to really be tough defensively going into the second quarter,” Nordby explained. The Wildcat defenders rose to the occasion, preventing Blaine from scoring in the second quarter while putting up six  goals to make it 10-4 at half.
“The halftime speech really came down to, 'Keep playing hard and don't let them back in the game,’” Nordby said.
The Wildcats kept up the scoring pace while allowing Blaine just one more goal for the game.

“Our defense really stepped up huge with our close defenders Nate Bluhm, Logan West, and Braedon Carr dominating,” Nordby said. “Mix in our athletic middies and it was really some of our best defending this season.”

Scoring multiple goals for the Wildcats were Colten Bergquist and Henry Reedy with four each followed by hat tricks going to Jake Willman and Max Olson.

“We seem to be peaking at the right time which is what section play is all about,” the coach said.
