Chisago Lakes tries to find identity in early season matches

Replacing five of your six starters in volleyball is never easy, especially when three of them were All Conference and one was the Mississippi 8 Conference Offensive Player of the Year, but the Chisago Lakes volleyball team is doing just that, and they are diving in the deep end early.

The ‘Cats took on St. Paul Como Park in their opener on Thursday, August 25 and lost three close sets 27-25, 25-22 and 25-18 to drop their match against the Tigers.

The very next day, Chisago Lakes played in the Rush City Tournament where they went 1-3, beating Coon Rapids 2-1, but losing to Litchfield 2-0, Pine River-Backus 2-0 and Cambridge-Isanti 2-0.

The win over the Cardinals was a thrilling one, as the ‘Cats won the first set 25-23 before dropping the second set 25-17. In these tournament formats, the girls only play best of three, so it the third set decided it all, and the ‘Cats held on for the 16-14 win to earn their first victory of the year.

The Wildcats got their astounding sixth game of the year in already on Monday, August 29 when they traveled to Hill Murray, a team that was in a three-way battle with CL last year for the top section team.

The Pioneers came out on top of this one, winning 3-0 with some relatively lopsided set scores, 25-19, 25-14 and 25-16.

After the early season flurry, the Wildcats will now have over a week off to regroup from their 1-5 start.

They’ll return to the court Thursday, September 8 at St. Paul Johnson, before opening their Mississippi 8 Conference schedule at home against Princeton on Tuesday, September 8.
