Wildcats battling for playoff position in tough Mississippi 8 Conference
Chisago Lakes 5, St. Francis 2
Strength in the singles lineup carried Chisago Lakes to a nice Mississippi 8 Conference win over St. Francis on Thursday, September 8.
Emily Erickson, Addie Carlson, Laine DeVries and Alivia Clasen swept their solo matches to collect four points for the Wildcats and secure the team win. All four girls won in straight sets over their Saint counterparts.
The top doubles team of Ellie Hilber and Audra Behnke put the stamp on the win with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Becker 4, Chisago Lakes 3
The Bulldogs of Becker claimed all three doubles spots and edged out one singles match in a very tight match against the Wildcats on Wednesday, September 14.
Erickson had a battle on her hands in first singles, losing the first set, but she rebounded to win the next two 6-4, 6-3 over Becker senior Ayla Brown.
Laine DeVries and Clasen won in straight sets at third and fourth singles while the three doubles teams fell in straight sets.
The match then came down to Carlson’s battle with Dani Nuest at two singles. Carlson had won the first set fairly comfortable at 6-2, but Nuest, a talented multi-sport athlete, came back to win 6-4, 6-3 in the second and third sets.
Cambridge-Isanti 5, Chisago Lakes 2
The Bluejackets turned the tables on the Wildcats on Friday, September 16 when they beat them 5-2.
Chisago Lakes’ wins came from Erickson at first singles by a score of 6-2, 6-1, and Clasen and Nora DeVries at second doubles by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 in a marathon affair.
Carlson put up a good fight at second doubles before falling 3-6, 5-7, and Hilber and Behnke won their first set at first doubles before dropping the next two to a tough C-I pair.
“It’s been a hard fought season for us so far,” Head Coach John Erickson said. “Our singles have been playing great tennis and our doubles are seeing big improvements each week. If we can get just a couple more wins, we should be able to get a home playoff match at our courts for the first round of sections!”
