9/23/2022 10:56:00 AM Vikings top Islanders and
Bulldogs in two game win streak
Big Lake 2, North Branch 0 The Big Lake Hornets scored once in each half to shut out the Viking girls’ soccer team 2-0 Thursday, September 15 at Big Lake High School. The Hornets scored once in each half - off a corner kick in the first half and from a free kick in the second half. Viking head coach Josh Kopp said “This game was pretty typical for our season. We did well moving the ball and dominated possession, but we just couldn’t score.”
North Branch 3, De La Salle 2 Freshman Katelin Hammond scored to put the Vikings up 3-2 in the first half, and the Vikings held on for a 3-2 win over the De La Sale Islanders Saturday, September 17 at De Las Salle High School on Nicollet Island.
The Vikings opened the scoring when freshman Sharleen Garcia Velazquez scored on a feed from a corner kick. After the Islanders tied it up, junior Ava Gerten scored to put the Vikings up 2-1. The Islanders again scored, knotting the game at 2-2. But Hammond scored before halftime to give the Vikings their third lead of the game. “We outshot them 15-6,” said Viking head coach Josh Kopp. “We are finally starting to find the back of the net. We changed our formation somewhat to try to get more people in the box to finish goals, and that helped us tonight.”
North Branch 4, Becker 3 The Vikings took a 4-1 lead at halftime against the Becker Bulldogs and hung on to beat the Bulldogs 4-3 for their first two-game winning streak of the season. The game was played Monday, September 19 at North Branch High School.
Sharleen Garcia Velazquez scored twice from corner kicks and Ava Gerten added two goals to give the Vikings their big lead. The Bulldogs scored two goals off free kicks midway through the second half to cut the Viking lead to 4-3. But the Vikings hung on to pick up their third win of the season. Viking head coach Josh Kopp said “We controlled the entire game. We outshot them 25-7. But we let them back in the game. We are a young team, and sometimes we commit silly fouls in bad locations. And in the second half of this game, we paid for those mistakes but had a big enough lead to get the win.”
Soccer Stuff The Vikings (3-7-0) will head to Cambridge-Isanti High School to play the Bluejackets at 5 p.m. this afternoon. On Monday, September 26 they will welcome the Princeton Tigers to North Branch High School, with the festivities getting underway at 7 p.m.
