Detzler shines on offense as NB wins two games

North Branch 3, Big Lake 2 (O.T.)
Drew Detzler had a hat trick on a soggy night, including the game winner in overtime, to lead the Viking boys’ soccer team to a 3-2 win over the Big Lake Hornets Thursday, September 15 at Big Lake.  Jose Flor was solid in the net, making 27 saves to help keep the Vikings in the game.

The skies opened up right at gametime and a heavy downpour lasted almost the entire first half.  Despite the rain, the Vikings came out strong and aggressive.  Detzler scored his first goal in the ninth minute to give the Vikings an early lead.  Big Lake tied it up a few minutes later on a free kick.   The Vikings regained the lead in the 15th minute on Detzler’s second goal of the night, and the Vikings led 2-1 at halftime.  The Hornets scored in the second half off a corner kick to tie the game 2-2.   The Vikings had several chances to break the tie, but the score remained 2-2 at the end of regulation.  With 1:32 left in the second overtime, Detzler completed his hat trick by scoring the game winner, giving the Vikings their first win in the conference this season.

Mesabi East 2, North Branch 0
The Vikings struggled to find a rhythm on against the Mesabi East Giants on Parents Day. Mesabi East pressured early and often.  After a couple of goals by the Giants, the Vikings pushed to take advantage of their speed up front but couldn’t establish any scoring opportunities.  Viking head coach Chad Johnson said, “We will go back to the drawing board and try and figure how they establish more offense during games.”  The game was played Saturday afternoon, September 17 at North Branch.

North Branch 2, Becker 1
Drew Detzler did it again!  He scored the game winner in overtime, leading the Vikings to a 2-1 win over the Becker Bulldogs on Senior Night, Monday, September 19 at North Branch.  The Vikings started strong, but an early goal by Eric Flor was waved off.  Detzler than scored on a free kick to put the Vikings up 1-0.   The Bulldogs tied it up about five minutes later and the first half ended tied at 1-1.  The teams traded scoring opportunities in the second half, but the game stayed 1-1 at the end of regulation.    Detzler scored his second goal 52 seconds into the second overtime, and the Vikings held on for the win.  Viking head coach Chad Johnson said “We had already been involved in two overtime games this season,  so we were ready to handle the pressure.  This was a big win for us, and a great way to kick off Homecoming Week.”

Soccer Stuff
The Vikings (3-5-1) will take on the Bluejackets tonight at 7 p.m. at Cambridge-Isanti High School.  On Saturday, they will head west to Delano High School to play the Tigers at 1 p.m.  On Monday, September 26, the Vikings will welcome  Princeton for a 5 p.m. game.
