Mehlhorn and Wilmer slam door on NB's season
Chisago Lakes 2, North Branch 1
Chisago Lakes Wildcat Chase Mehlhorn scored twice in the third period and Wildcat goalie Max Wilmer played what was probably the best game of his career to lead the seventh-seeded Wildcats to a 2-1 upset over the second-seeded North Branch Vikings in the quarterfinals of the Section 5A playoffs last Thursday, February 20.  The win advanced the Wildcats to the section semifinal game against Pine City.  The loss ended the Vikings’ bid for a second straight trip to the state tournament.  The game was played in front of a packed house at Chisago Lakes Arena.

Although none of the area gymnasts threatened to podium finish at the state tournament, they still had a great time and a great showing at the state gymnastics meet at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium on Saturday, February 22.

A haul of Chisago County wrestlers go to state
Southern Chisago County will be well represent at this weekend’s state high school wrestling tournament, with four wrestlers from each school heading to the Xcel Center in St. Paul.  In last weekend’s Section 4AA individual tournament, the Vikings dominated the middle weights as junior Josh Logan (132), sophomore Brandt Bombard (138) and sophomore Ashton LaBelle (145) won section championships.  For the Wildcats, junior Austin Siefert (182) and senior Connor Bleymeyer (285) won section championships.  One Viking finished second – senior Austin Sonnek (152).  Two Wildcats had second place finishes – freshman Andrew Novack (126) and junior Nolan Huffman (145).

Chisago Lakes continues roll-hanging up 11 on Bluejackets

Ben Jinks and Ben Johnson each had a hat trick as the Wildcat boys’ hockey team crushed the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets last Thursday, February 6 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  For Jinks, the goals were his first three goals of the season.  And for Johnson, it was his second hat trick of the season.

Wildcats upset: No rematch with Breck for section title

Dani Burgen had two goals and two assists and Jenna Lawry had a goal and two assists to lead the second-seeded Wildcats to a 5-0 win over the seventh-seeded Totino Grace Eagles in the quarterfinals of the Section 5A playoffs Wednesday, February 5 at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.  The Wildcats outshot the Eagles 32-16 for the game and Wildcat goalie Anna Kittleson stopped all 16 shots she faced to earn the shutout.

Turek can't return soon enough for reeling Vikings

Playing at Monticello, Viking Tucker Sachs scored the first goal of the game at 4:51 of the first period, assisted by Joey Kerchner and Zach Larson.  But the Magic answered just 13 seconds later tie the game at 1-1.  They scored six more goals – two in each period – to beat the Vikings 7-1.  The game was played Friday, February 7 at Moose Sherritt Arena in Monticello.  The Magic dominated most phases of the game, outshooting the Vikings 41-18.  One bright spot is that the Vikings did a good job on the penalty kill, not allowing a goal in four Monticello power plays.

Big Lake beat the Vikings 42-25 in a dual meet at home on Wednesday, January 29.  But in the six contested matches, the Vikings beat Big Lake 19-6.

Chisago Lakes pounces on opportunity and upsets North Branch in huge game

In the second matchup between the Wildcat and Viking boys’ hockey teams this year, Wildcat Ben Johnson scored a power play goal at 8:56 of the third period to give the Wildcats a 4-3 lead over the Vikings.  The Wildcats added an empty-netter with eight seconds left in the game to make the final score Chisago Lakes 5, North Branch 3.  The game, a home game for the Vikings, was played at Chisago Lakes Arena this past Tuesday, February 4.

The Wildcats and Vikings got together for their annual dual meet last Thursday at North Branch High School, with the Wildcats prevailing 48-32.  The Vikings fielded just eight wrestlers and won six of the eight contested weights and had a 32-12 advantage in those matchups.  But the Wildcats fielded a full lineup for one of the first times this year and picked up 36 points from six forfeits in the non-contested weights.

Turek leads Vikings to upset of state-ranked Gentry Academy

If there was ever any doubt how much senior goalie Jake Turek means to the unranked Viking boys’ hockey team, last Thursday’s 6-3 win at home against the seventh-ranked Gentry Academy Stars erased  those doubts.  The Stars averaged over a shot per minute in the game, outshooting the Vikings 52-32.  But Turek allowed just three goals on those 52 shots while his teammates made the most of their opportunities, enabling the Vikings to come away with a win against one of the top teams in the state.

It had been nearly a month between alpine ski meets for the Chisago Lakes Wildcats, but they showed no ill affects of the layoff when they swept the top spots at their first Northwest Suburban Conference meet of the year at Trollhaugen on Thursday, January 9.

'Cats fail to pick up a win vs Monticello, tourney postponed

The Wildcat wrestling team lost a dual meet to the Monticello Magic 54-28 last Thursday at Chisago Lakes High School.  The Wildcats filled 11 of the 14 spots on their roster.  Each team had three forfeits and the Wildcats won two of the eight contested matches.  Hayden Trupe (132) pinned Wyatt Witschen with 12 seconds left in the first period and Nolan Huffman major-decisioned Mason Smith 14-0.  Connor Bleymeyer (285) was pinned in the first period by Jesse Midas of Monticello.  Midas is ranked fifth at 220 pounds in Class AA.

The St. Francis Saints scored midway through the second period to break a 2-2 tie and the Saints went on to beat the Wildcats boys’ hockey team 4-2 last Tuesday, January 14 at Chisago Lakes Arena.

Bombard and LaBelle unbeaten at Mounds View Duals for NB

The Vikings wrestled in the Mounds View Duals on Saturday, January 11 and match results became available just a few days ago.  The Vikings, fielding just five wrestlers, lost all four duals – to Blaine, Eastview, Maple Grove and Orono.  But the focus all year has been on getting individual wrestlers ready for the section tournament.  Brandt Bombard (138) and Ashton LaBelle (145) both had a good tournament, each finishing 4-0 in their individual matches.  In the closest match of the day, LaBelle decisioned Mason Enderlin of Eastview 1-0.

SISTER ACT: The Devries sisters lead the charge for CL hockey

New fans attending the Wildcats girls hockey game against SFNB on Tuesday, January 7 at Chisago Lakes Arena may have thought they were hearing things when public address announcer Suzanne Gillespie announced the starting lineup and kept repeating the name “Devries”.  But they weren’t hearing things – the four Devries sisters – senior Claire, junior Grace, freshman Laine and seventh-grader Nora – were all in the starting lineup, along with their freshman cousin Malia Mckinnon and senior goalie Anna Kittleson.  And the team was led onto the ice at the beginning of the first period by yet another Devries sister, six-year-old Rose – who is just a bit too young to play for the Wildcats.

'Cats win three of four, move into top 10 and first in Mississippi 8

On a night when six-year-old Rose Devries led the Wildcat team onto the ice and her four sisters – senior Claire, junior Grace, freshman Laine and seventh-grader Nora –  and their freshman cousin Malia Mckinnon comprised the starting lineup, the Wildcats celebrated with a 7-1 win over SFNB.  Dani Burgen notched her second hat trick of the season. Both hat tricks have come at the expense of overmatched SFNB.  The game was played at Chisago Lakes Arena on Tuesday, January 7.

'Cats take care of business against overmatched Bluejackets

A second-period penalty shot goal by the Wildcats’ Nick Helland highlighted a penalty-filled 5-2 win over the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets last Thursday, January 9 at Isanti Ice Arena.  The Wildcats built a 5-0 lead through the first two periods with goals from five different players.  They outshot the Bluejackets 48-18 for the game.

North Branch fails litmus test against section power Monticello

The highly anticipated section matchup between the Vikings and the Jeffrey Henrikson Show – a/k/a the Monticello Magic -  was not much of a game for the first two periods.  The Magic completely dominated the Vikings and the only thing that kept it close was the play of Viking goalie Jake Turek.  Monticello’s Henrikson had a hat trick in a two-and-a-half-minute stretch early in the second period.  The Vikings played a lot better in the third period but managed just one goal and lost to the Magic 3-1.

North Branch plays their best game of the year in loss to Princeton

Despite losing to the Tigers on Tuesday, January 7, North Branch Head Coach Alex Kuhlman was very happy with the way his team played against Princeton.
The Tigers are one of the better teams in the conference this year and have been ranked in the top 10 in Class AAA at different times this season.

North Branch skates past Chisago Lakes in rivalry game

A standing-room only crowd of Viking and Wildcat fans was in attendance at the first matchup of the year between archrivals North Branch and Chisago Lakes.  When the Vikings increased their lead to 4-0 midway through the second period, it looked like they might run away with the game.  But the Wildcats’ Karston Edson scored before the end of the period.  Inspired, the Wildcats dominated the third period and Edson added another goal midway through the final stanza to cut the lead to 4-2.  The Vikings were finally able to breathe easier when Joey Kerchner scored an empty netter with 1:55 to go to make the final score North Branch 5, Chisago Lakes 2.  The game was played last Friday, January 3 and was a home game for the Wildcats.

Chisago Lakes goes 1-1-1 against prestigious hockey schools

Despite missing leading scorer Dani Burgen, who was with the U18 National Team for the World Championships in Slovakia, the Class A Wildcats hung with the Class AA Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars in the semifinal game of the Silver Division of the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic.  But the Jaguars exploded for four goals in the third period to beat the Wildcats 4-1.  The game was played at the Super Rink in Blaine on New Year’s Eve.

North Branch girls basketball started the year 7-0, surpassing last year’s win total easily, and even climbing into the top 15 rankings in the state in Class AAA. Everything was coming up aces for the Lady Vikings.

Ben Johnson scored twice in the second period and goalie Max Wilmer stopped all 23 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season to lead the Wildcats to a 4-0 win over the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm.  The game was played in front of the home crowd at Chisago Lakes Arena last Saturday, January 4.

Four of five wrestlers place for Wildcats at Mora Invitational

At the Mora Invitational last Saturday, Connor Bleymeyer (285) was pinned by Bennett Weber of Waconia midway through the second period of the championship match.  But it’s nothing for Bleymeyer to hang his head about – Weber is the number one ranked wrestler in the state in Class AAA at 285 pounds.  The Class AA Wildcats sent five wrestlers to Mora and four of them placed.  In addition to Bleymeyer at 285, Nolan Huffman (145) was fourth; Austin Siefert (170) came in fifth; and Ben Klun (195) placed fifth.  As a team, the Wildcats finished ninth out of ten teams.  And Waconia (not surprisingly), led by Weber, won the tournament.

Vikes kept streaking on the back of special teams and Croal's offense

With the score tied 2-2 against the Superior (Wisc.) Spartans after the halfway point of the second period, the Vikings boys’ hockey team scored three goals in a two-and-a-half-minute span to put the game out of reach and went on to beat the Spartans 6-2.  The game was played Thursday, January 2 at Chisago Lakes Arena.
