The Wildcats added an insurance goal a few minutes later and beat the Vikings 3-1 at on Thursday, September 3 at Chisago Lakes High School.

VIKES ON FIRE: Girls soccer wins three in a row in M8C play
The Viking girls’ soccer team did something that has likely never been done in Minnesota high school soccer – they won three games in a row by the score of 2-1.  More importantly, the three straight wins vaulted the Vikings into third place in the Mississippi 8 Conference, just one point behind conference leaders St. Francis and Monticello and one point ahead of fourth-place Chisago Lakes.

Defense shines through while offense still finding groove for CL
It’s an understatement to say the Wildcat girls’ soccer team is defensive-minded.  Exhibit A is the recent three game stretch against the conference co-leaders where a total of three goals were scored.  The Wildcats lost to the Monticello Magic 1-0 Tuesday, September 8 at Monticello High School.  In the rematch at home on Thursday, September 10, Alyssa Hempel scored the only goal for the Wildcats midway through the first half as they tied the Magic 1-1.  And on Tuesday, September 15, the Wildcats battled the St. Francis Fighting Saints to a 0-0 tie at St. Francis High School.

Bollman and Vikings frustrate St. Francis en route to 0-0 tie
North Branch 0, St. Francis 0 (OT)
Twenty minutes into the Viking boys’ soccer team’s season opener at home on Tuesday, August 27 against the St. Francis Fighting Saints, the Saints had what looked like an easy scoring opportunity.  But as a Saints’ player shot the ball towards the wide open left side of the net, Viking goalkeeper Tanner Bollman flashed across the front of the net from right to left and got in front of the ball, which bounced out into the right side of the penalty box.  Instinctively, Bollman bolted back to the right side of the net and the St. Francis player kicked it right into him.  A Chisago County Press employee who witnessed the play said, “The first save was one of the nicest saves I’ve ever seen in soccer.  The second save was just desperation but was incredible nonetheless.”

Bulldogs disappointed by forfeit to end the season, look forward to 2021
The pandemic-shortened 2020 Chisago Lakes Bulldogs season ended with a whimper.  The Bulldogs were scheduled to play the Ramsey Renegades on Saturday, August 8 in the second round of the Region 1C playoffs.  Vacations, scheduled in the spring when it looked like the season would be cancelled, claimed several players, leaving the Bulldogs with just eleven eligible players – still enough to play and have a couple of subs.  But one player, disappointed in his recent performances, decided against playing.  Another had a co-worker test positive for the coronavirus, so he went into quarantine and was unavailable to play.  With just nine players, the game could still go ahead.  So, the teams headed to Hinckley and warmed up as the Bulldogs waited for their ninth player.  But the player never showed, and neither he nor his other contacts answered their phones.  With only eight players, the Bulldogs had to forfeit – their second loss in the double-elimination playoffs, ending their season.  The player who didn’t show was immediately released by the Bulldogs.

Bulldogs drop first game in playoffs, do or die on Saturday
Hinckley 4, Chisago Lakes 3
Aggressive baserunning by starting pitcher Hunter Lindstrom enabled the Bulldogs to tie their Region1C playoff game with the Hinckley Knights 3-3 in the top of the eighth inning.  But a double into the left field corner by Hinckley’s TJ Johnson drove in a runner from first to give the Knights a 4-3 walkoff win.  The win put Hinckley in the winner’s bracket and sent the Bulldogs to the loser’s bracket.  The Bulldogs will face the Ramsey Renegades this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hinckley in the double-elimination tournament, and the loser will be eliminated from the playoffs.  The winner will go on to play Sunday at 11 a.m.  All games in the Region 1C tournament will be played at Brennan Field in Hinckley this season.
