Keeping their momentum going from last week’s buzzsaw performance through the first couple rounds of the section tournament, Greta Gillach and Emily Erickson started off scorching-hot on Tuesday, October 19 in the semifinals.

North Branch survives wild shootout with Hawks
North Branch knew they were in the meat of their schedule despite being 6-0 heading into their Friday night showdown with the Hermantown Hawks  October 15.
Three of NB’s toughest opponents were in the last four games of their slate, and they passed the first test two weeks ago with a win over Grand Rapids.  But their next test awaited in the form of the Hawks, who were 4-2 heading into the game and have always been a thorn in NB’s side.

Willmar quarterback Alex Schramm ran for four touchdowns and threw for another as the seventh-ranked Willmar Cardinals beat the Wildcats 42-6 last Friday, October 15 at Hodapp Filed at Kennedy Elementary School in Willmar.

North Branch's spirited run ends in section championship
The Viking girls’ soccer team made it to the Section 7AA championship game after beating Grand Rapids in the semifinals but lost the championship game 3-0 to the Cloquet-Carlton Lumberjacks.  The Vikings were led by a solid senior class but could continue to be competitive in future seasons as quite a few of their starters and stars are sophomores and eighth graders this season, including leading scorer Ava Gerten.

Homecoming Heroics
Chisago Lakes 24, Cambridge-Isanti 21
In front of a standing-room-only Wildcat homecoming crowd, Bryce Morley kicked a 22-yard field goal with 38 seconds left to give the Wildcats a 24-21 lead over the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets.  But the game wasn’t over until Nick Wasko intercepted a pass at the Wildcat 12-yard line with eight seconds remaining to seal the win.
It was a beautiful night for a football game last Friday.  And the Wildcats overcame two fumbles and two bad snaps on punts to pick up just their second win of the season.

For most of the season, it was a bit unknown if Chisago Lakes’ Greta Gillach, one of the top singles players in the section, was going to go at a state tournament bid on her own, or if she was going to team up with the ‘Cats second singles player, the talented Emily Erickson, to create a formidable duo to make a section run.

Gerten leads Lady Vikes to first round section win

QUARTERFINALS
North Branch 5, Hibbing 1
Ava Gerten scored four goals as the third-seeded Vikings dominated from start to finish and beat the sixth-seeded Hibbing/Chisholm Bluejackets 5-1 this past Tuesday, October 12 at North Branch High School in a Section 7AA quarterfinal game.  The Vikings will travel to Grand Rapids High School tonight for a 7 p.m. semifinal matchup against the second-seeded Grand Rapids Thunderhawks, who crushed Mesabi East 9-0 Tuesday night.  The Vikings and the Thunderhawks tied 0-0 early in the regular season.  Next Tuesday, October 19, the winner of tonight’s game will play the winner of the game between top-seeded Cloquet-Carlton and fifth-seeded Duluth Denfeld for the section championship at the home field of the higher of the two remaining teams.

Both Chisago Lakes soccer teams upset North Branch squads

Chisago Lakes 2, North Branch 1
Wildcat Katherine Saueressig picked a great time to score her first goal of the season, breaking a 1-1 tie to give the Wildcats a 2-1 win over the Vikings.  The Vikings got on the board 15 minutes into the game.  A throw in ended up in the Wildcat box.  Summer Fruth volleyed it back over her own head from the far post, and Sharleen Garcia Velazquez finished it off to put the Vikings up 1-0.  But the Wildcats answered just 24 seconds later.  On the ensuing kickoff, defender Abby Rogers took the ball up the middle and laid the ball off to Madison Kubalek, who scored to tie the game at 1-1.  Momentum swung back and forth throughout the second half.  With 15 minutes left in the game, the Viking defense tried to clear a ball from their own end, but instead sent it into the middle of the field.  Saueressig was in the right spot and fired a one-timer from 40 yards out for the winning goal.

CL fails to capitalize on St. Francis miscues, falls 19-7
When the Wildcats played at St. Francis last Friday night, it looked like they would go into halftime tied 7-7.  But the Fighting Saints scored on a three-play drive just before halftime to go up 13-7.  The Wildcats kept it close for most of the second half, but eventually lost the game 19-7 to drop to 1-4 on the season.

Wildcats get on a win streak

Madison Kubalek scored her second hat trick of the season to lead the Wildcats to a 5-0 shutout win over the Becker Bulldogs Tuesday, September 28 at Becker High School.  The Wildcats scored twice in the first half and added three more goals in the second half.  Katelyn Barnick and Allyssa Hempel each had a goal and an assist for the Wildcats, and Alexandra Bartz and Addyson Barrett each picked up an assist.

NB boys shut out Zimmerman

Viking head coach Jake Borash had an interesting day last Saturday in addition to the Vikings shutting out the Zimmerman Thunder 2-0 in front of the home crowd at North Branch High School.  The opposing coach was Devin Chuba, who was Borash’s college teammate at the University of Minnesota Morris.  And due to the referee shortage in high school soccer, the JV game that followed the varsity game didn’t have any referees.  So Borash, who has 14 years of refereeing experience, referee the JV game – with the blessing of Chuba.

Vikings snap losing skid against Apollo

The Vikings’ three game losing streak skidded to a halt when they crushed the St. Cloud Apollo Eagles 9-0 Saturday, October 2 at North Branch High School.  Paris Kopp, Lucille Anderson and Sharleen Garcia Velazquez each scored twice for the Vikings.  Lilly Johnson, Ava Gerten and Emmie Meyer also had goals.  The Vikings had six assists in the game.  Gerten had two, with one assist apiece coming from Johnson, Abby Randall, Drew Moryn and Sharleen Garcia Velazquez.  Goalkeeper Sharis Garcia Velazquez recorded her sixth shutout of the season.

Rocori takes it to Chisago Lakes, running up 40 by halftime
With a devastating passing attack, the Rocori Spartans scored on their first six possessions to build a 40-7 halftime lead and went on to beat the Wildcats 40-21 last Friday, September 24 at Chisago Lakes High School.  The only thing the Spartans weren’t very good at were extra points, as they only converted two of their six two-point attempts for the game.  But that didn’t really matter.

Monticello was always going to be a brutal match up for the Chisago Lakes girls swimming and diving team, as they are one of the top Class A teams in the state, but the ‘Cats caught them at a tough time for their lineup, and it showed on the scoreboard.

When the Wildcats fell behind to the second-ranked Becker Bulldogs 14-0 in the first quarter of last Friday’s game in front of the home crowd, the possibility of a blowout loss reared its ugly head. But the Wildcats got back in the game, scoring twice in the third quarter to tie it 14-14. The Bulldogs responded with a touchdown late in the third quarter and held off the Wildcats for a 21-14 win.

The Wildcat girls put a scare into the St. Francis Fighting Saints, who are ranked eighth in the state, by scoring right at the beginning of the game. But the Fighting Saints came back to score twice to beat the Wildcats 2-1. The game was played Tuesday, September 14 at St. Francis High School.

The Big Lake Hornets play a defensive style of soccer that makes it tough for teams to get off good shots with the ball in play, which the Vikings experienced in a home game last Thursday. So, the Vikings, who controlled the ball for virtually the entire game, had to find another way to score. And they did. Led by freshman Drew Moryn and senior Emmie Meyer,  the Vikings scored three goals off corner kicks and shut out the Hornets 3-0.

Jay Brown has resigned as head coach of the Chisago Lakes Wildcats baseball team. Brown joined the Wildcat baseball program as an assistant coach 25 years ago and took over as head coach for longtime coach Pat Collins in 2015.

Grit and horses. What could make a better story? Grit, the courage and resolve to push through all difficulties to achieve a goal, is certainly what it took for local rider, Cecilia Emilsson (Cissi) to negotiate all the phases of the American Eventing Championships contest, winning the Novice Division September 4 in Lexington, Kentucky. Emilsson did this top a former race horse, Blazing Angel.

The Viking girls’ soccer team outplayed and outshot the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks at home on Tuesday, August 31, but when it was all over the teams settled for a 0-0 overtime tie.  Viking head coach Josh Kopp said “We outshot them 30-10, including about 18-4 in shots on goal.  We had eight corner kicks but couldn’t finish any of them.  It was one of those games where we found everything but the back of the net.”

The Cloquet-Carlton Lumberjacks scored in the first half and held off the Wildcat girls’ soccer team for a 1-0 victory Wednesday, September 1 at Chisago Lakes High School.  Wildcat head coach Wayne Kugel said “This was our best outing to date.  We held the Lumberjacks scoreless in the second half and started to make significant strides with our overall game.  We competed.  We are starting to get our game plan rhythm. The girls were fantastic.  We expect to continue to get better with each match.”

Wildcats defense creates havoc in 33-6 drubbing over Big Lake

The Wildcats turned three Big Lake turnovers into touchdowns in the first half and went on to beat the Hornets 33-6 Thursday, September 2 at Big Lake High School.  Quarterback Nick Wasko led the Wildcats’ offensive dominance with 28 carries for 184 yards and three touchdowns as the Wildcats piled up 325 yards on the ground.  Fullback Ashton Pearson took care of most of the rest of the workload, carrying the ball 13 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Bulldogs fall to Bandits, season comes to end
East Bethel 10, Chisago Lakes 5
In the Region 1C play-in game, the East Bethel Bandits broke open a close game with six runs in the seventh inning and went on to beat the Bulldogs 10-5 Thursday, August 5 at Solheim Field in Princeton. The loss ended the season for the Bulldogs and the Bandits moved on to the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
