Marquardt dazzles from the mound and plate in win over Tigers
Chisago Lakes 7, Princeton 1
Reed Marquardt picked a good time to hit the Wildcats’ first home run of the year.  Marquardt, the starting pitcher against the Princeton Tigers, hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie, and the Wildcats went on to beat the Tigers 7-1 in the second round of the Section 7AAA playoffs.  Marquardt pitched six innings to pick up the win.  He allowed one earned run on three hits, walked five and stuck out seven.  Augie Brown pitched a scoreless seventh to finish the game.  The win sent the Wildcats to a third-round winner’s bracket matchup against the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks.

The eighth-seeded Princeton Tigers that the top-seeded Wildcats met in the Section 7AAA playoff opener at home Wednesday, June 2 hardly resembled the team the Wildcats had played less than a week earlier in the regular season finale.  In the earlier game, the Tigers pitched well and played fine defense for most of the game, and actually led 1-0 until the Wildcats scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to win 4-1.

Hailey Bistodeau became the first North Branch competitor to qualify for the girls state golf tournament in over a decade,  when she finished third in the Section 5AA meet at Highland National Golf Course in St. Paul June 1 and 3.

The St. Francis Silverbacks broke an 8-8 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth to beat the Bulldogs 10-8 on Wednesday, June 2 at Chisago Lakes High School.

After a demoralizing 14-2 loss to seventh-seeded Duluth Denfeld in the first round of sections, North Branch started their long march through the loser’s bracket with a commanding 11-2 win over sixth-seeded Cloquet on Thursday, June 3 at North Branch.

'Cats hold off Big Lake for M8C title, earn top seed in sections

The Wildcats suffered their first and only blowout loss of the season, falling to the Andover Huskies 11-4 Monday, May 24 at Andover.  The game was tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the fifth, when the Huskies scored five times – with a two-run double and a two-run homer being the big hits – to go up 9-4.  They added two solo home runs in the sixth to put an exclamation point on their 11-4 win.

Sanvik spins a gem in sections and CL walks off on a suicide squeeze

Adam Brown’s suicide squeeze scored Ryan Sanvik from third base to give the Wildcats a 2-1 win over the Hibbing Bluejackets in the opening game of the Section 7AAA tournament Tuesday, June 1 at Chisago Lakes High School.  The win set up a today’s second round game at home against fourth-seeded Princeton, who beat Hermantown 5-2 to advance in the winner’s bracket.

Fans of the Chisago Lakes boys lacrosse team have been treated to some great wins at home as they continued their domination in racking up three more wins. The Cats outscored their opponents 67-15 over the three games in five days.

Wildcats split conference games with end of season in sight

Chisago Lakes 12, Monticello 2 (5 innings)
The Wildcats pounded out 12 hits and scored 12 runs to crush the Monticello Magic 12-2 Tuesday, May 18 at Monticello.  The game was shortened to five innings because of the ten-run rule.  The Wildcats scored four runs in the first inning, three in the third and piled on five in the fourth.  Four Wildcats had two hits each – Leah Zaruba, Haley Sogard, Anya Nephew and Chloe Zupko.  Nephew and Leah Zaruba each had a double.  Nephew drove in three runs, and Sogard, Brooklyn Nelson and Hailey Benjamin had two RBIs each.  Ashley Mandell started and went three innings.  She allowed two earned runs on three hits, walked two and struck out five.  Anna Zaruba pitched the final two innings.  She didn’t allow a hit and struck out one Magic batter.

Chisago Lakes comfortably wraps up Mississippi 8 title; next up section play

With the Wildcats leading the Big Lake Hornets 6-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Wildcat defense faltered, leading to four Hornets runs that cut the Wildcat lead to 6-4.    But the Wildcats answered with two runs in the top of the fifth and went on to beat Big Lake 8-4.  Reed Marquardt started and picked up the win, going five and two-thirds innings.  He allowed four runs – none earned – on four hits, walked three and struck out six.  Nathan Zingerman finished up.  In one and a third innings, he allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one.  The game was played at Big Lake on Thursday, May 20.

North Branch gets revenge on CL under the lights

The Vikings scored twice in the top of the seventh on a hit batter, a walk, and three singles – two of which were fly balls that appeared to be lost in the lights – to beat the Wildcats in a thriller 4-2 Tuesday evening, May 18 at Chisago Lakes High School.  The Vikings and Wildcats split the season series, with the Wildcats winning 10-1 at North Branch High School exactly four weeks earlier.  Jordan Axberg went all the way for the Vikings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits.  He walked two and struck out three.  Ryan Sanvik took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing two unlucky earned runs on three hits.  He walked two, hit one and struck out two.  Wildcat starter Augie Brown went five innings.  He allowed just two hits and walked two.  But he hit five batters.

Chisago Lakes 14, Duluth Denfeld 4 (6 innings)
The Wildcats girls’ softball team were not very kind hosts to their visitors from the north last Friday afternoon.  They silenced the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks 17-1 in the first of two games and thumped the Duluth Denfeld Hunters 14-4 in the nightcap.  Both games were shortened because of the ten-run rule.

Short-handed 'Cats open with win

The Wildcats pounded out 14 hits, including three apiece by Nathan Zingerman and Collin Hackl, and beat the Princeton Tigers in the season opener last Thursday, April 15 at Princeton.  Zingerman pitched the first four innings to pick up the win.  He allowed three earned runs on five hits, walked one and struck out two.  Ryan Sanvik went the final three innings to pick up the save.  He allowed one earned run on three hits, struck out four and didn’t walk anybody.

Chisago Lakes' tourney run ends at the hands of Gentry Academy

In the state tournament Class A semifinal game last Thursday, April 1, the fourth-seeded Wildcat girls’ hockey team took on the top-seeded Gentry Academy Stars for the second time this season.  Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the results were similar to their earlier 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Stars.  The Stars scored three goals in the first period, withstood an inspired Wildcat performance in the second period and scored three goals in the last few minutes of the game to win 6-0 and stop the Wildcats one game short of the state championship game.  The game was played at the Xcel Energy Center in St, Paul.

Stars shine in opening round comeback for CL
Senior Jenna Lawry scored a power play goal at 11:28 of the third period to give the Chisago Lakes Wildcats a 4-3 over the Mound Westonka White Hawks in the quarterfinals of the state high school girls hockey tournament Friday, March 26 at the Xcel Energy Center.  Junior Dani Burgen had a hat trick to account for the Wildcats’ first three goals.

In an amazing display of talent, depth, desire and coaching, Chisago Lakes divers Storm Opdahl, Jimmy Nord and Tobie Stiles swept the top three spots at the Class A state diving meet on Thursday, March 18 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center at the University of Minnesota.

The Chisago Lakes Wildcat girls’ hockey team is on its way to the state tournament for the fourth time in school history.  On Thursday, March 18, the Wildcats beat the Breck Mustangs 3-2 to advance to the Section 5A championship game.  And on Saturday, March 20, the Wildcats beat the Orono Spartans 3-2 in overtime to punch their ticket to the Xcel Energy Center.  The fourth-seeded Wildcats will face the fifth-seeded Mound Westonka White Hawks tomorrow night – Friday, March 26 – at 8 p.m.

Girls hockey earns top seed
Chisago Lakes 5, Northern Tier 2
Wildcat senior Jenna Lawry scored four goals to lead the Wildcats to a 5-2 win over the Northern Tier Stars Thursday, March 11 at Isanti Ice Arena.  It was Lawry’s third hat trick of the season.  The Wildcats bombed the Stars’ net with shots, outshooting Northern Tier 60-26 for the game.

Opdahl looking to defend state title; Nord and Stiles joining again
The Chisago Lakes boys diving team continued their ridiculous stretch of success by qualifying three divers for the state tournament for the second year in a row. And one of them just happens to be the defending state champion in Storm Opdahl, and the other two both secured top seven finishes at the Class A state meet last year.
