Lawry scores with .01 seconds left, 'Cats stun Princeton
Chisago Lakes 4, Princeton 3
Thomas Overgaard scored with 0.1 seconds remaining in the game to cap off a wild night of hockey and gave the Wildcats a 4-3 win over conference and Section 5A foe Princeton last Thursday, January 10 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  Matthew Swanson had a hat trick for the Tigers in the loss.

Vikings come up just short in big section tests
The Viking boys’ hockey team continued its successful season over the past week, going 2-1-1 to improve to 12-3-1 for the season.  One of those wins a was a 1-0 forfeit victory over Legacy Christian Academy, who could not field a full team due to several players being “under investigation” for unspecified infractions.

On Tuesday, January 8, North Branch hosted Highway 95 rival Cambridge-Isanti, and the visiting Bluejackets got to leave celebrating after winning 55-37.

Swanson continues roll while North Branch fights for points

The Viking wrestling team led 12-10 after Josh Logan won at 132 in a dual meet at St. Francis last Friday.  But the Fighting Saints won the next eight weights, including four forfeits, and went on to beat the Vikings 50-18.  The Vikings trailed 10-0 after the 113-pound match.  But Ashton LaBelle (120) won by decision, Brandt Bombard (126) pinned his opponent and Logan (132) won by decision to establish the brief Viking lead.  Brandon Swanson (285) returned from illness to pin Kyle Lindenfelser of St. Francis at 3:05 for the Vikings’ final six points in their 50-18 loss.

The Wildcats hosted Monticello on Tuesday, January 8 hoping to earn their first Mississippi 8 Conference win of the year, but they ended up disappointed as Monticello held on for a 53-46 win.

Vikings take first round from Chisago Lakes

Justin Sachs scored on a power play with just over two minutes to go in the game to break a 3-3 tie with the Wildcats and give the Vikings a 4-3 lead.    Joey Kirchner scored and empty-netter with just under a minute to go in the third period to seal the 5-3 victory and complete his first career hat trick.  The game was played Saturday, January 5 at Chisago Lakes Arena.

Vikes fall short against big schools

The Vikings wrestled in a quadrangular against three big schools at Cambridge-Isanti and were overwhelmed in each dual.  They lost 75-3 to Bemidji, 69-3 to Cambridge-Isanti and 75-6 to Stillwater.  Austin Sonnek (145) earned the only points against Bemidji, beating his opponent 4-3.  Brandt Bombard (132) decisioned his opponent 7-2 for the only team points against Cambridge-Isanti.  And Bombard also picked up the only six points against Stillwater, when his opponent forfeited for an injury time violation.  The quad took place last Friday, January 4

Some games, defense seems to be the problem for the Chisago Lakes girls basketball team. Some games, it seems like it’s the offense.
The team just hasn’t been able to consistently mesh their overall game, and it has cost them. They played good defense in the opener of the Monticello Holiday Tournament, but couldn’t score at all, losing 42-29.

'Cats crushed by Rangers

When the Wildcats played the Forest Lake Rangers last Thursday, the Rangers’ Dalton Saltness scored two goals in the first period.  Not a bad night.  But he wasn’t finished.  He also scored twice in the second period.  Four goals is a pretty good night at any level of hockey.  Saltness kept going and scored two more times in the third period.  When it was all over, Saltness had a double-hat trick and Forest Lake had beaten the Wildcats 10-2.  The game was played at the Forest Lakes Sports Center.

Chisago Lakes grinding out matches

The Wildcat wrestling team had one of its best performances of the season last Saturday at the Mora Invitational.  Zach Carlson (220) finished first, Connor Bleymeyer came in second and all seven Wildcats ended up on the podium.  As a team, the Wildcats finished seventh out of the ten squads at the meet.

Fourth straight win gives NB a 9-2-1 record

Justin Sachs scored the only goal of the game at 4:20 of the second period and the Vikings held the Willmar Cardinals to just eight shots on goal for the entire game.  It all added up to a 1-0 win for the Vikings in the opening game of the Little Falls Holiday Tournament on Friday, December 28.  The tournament was held at Exchange Arena in Little Falls.

The Wildcats scored three goals in the second period to take control of the game and went on to beat the Proctor Rails 5-2 Saturday, December 22 at St. Luke’s Sports and Event Center in Proctor.  The Wildcats outshot the Rails 33-30 for the game.  Max Wilmer picked up his first career win in goal for the Wildcats by stopping 28 of the 30 shots he faced.

Turek helps North Branch steal a win from St. Michael-Albertville
North Branch 4, Sauk Rapids-Rice 1
Vikings’ leading scorer Cody Croal continued to do what he does best, scoring two goals to lead the Vikings over the Sauk-Rapids-Rice Storm 4-1 Tuesday, December 18 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  The Vikings outshot the Storm 34-24 for the game and Viking goalie Jake Turek stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced to pick up the win.

After the Princeton Tigers scored three straight goals early in the third period to take a 4-2 lead, the Wildcat girls’ hockey team regrouped and put the pressure on.  But their rally ultimately fell short and they lost 5-4 to the Tigers Tuesday, December 18 at Princeton Ice Arena.

In last Thursday’s game at Princeton, Tate Swanson scored twice to tie the game at 2-2.  But the Tigers broke the tie with a goal last in the third period and added an empty netter with six seconds remaining to make the final score Princeton 4, Chisago Lakes 2.

North Branch swamps CL in a forfeit-filled match up

The North Branch Vikings and Chisago Lakes Wildcats, due to holes in their lineups, illnesses and/or injuries, competed at just six weights when they met at a quadrangular at North Branch High School last Thursday, December 13.  All six of the contested matches were decided by fall, including pins at four weights in a row by Vikings Josh Logan (138), Austin Sonnek (145), Trevor Anderson (152) and Sam Sonnek (160).  Wildcats Isaiah Sistrunk (170) and Ben Klun (220) won their matches by pin.  So the Vikings led 24-12 in contested matches and, adding in five forfeit wins for the Vikings and three forfeit wins for the Wildcats, the Vikings won the match 54-30.

CL suffers first losses of the year

Things looked good for the Wildcats early in their game against Gentry Academy when Justin Lawry scored just 46 seconds into the game, assisted by Thomas Overgaard and Jackson Waltman to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.  But the Stars scored three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead and never relinquished the lead, beating the Wildcats 6-3.  It was the first loss of the season for the Wildcats.  The game was played at the TRIA Rink – the practice facility for the Minnesota Wild – on Wednesday, December 12.

Wildcats working hard early

A tough Class Cambridge-Isanti Bluejacket squad crushed the Wildcats 74-6 at Chisago Lakes High School last Thursday, December 6.  The Wildcat trailed 74-0 before Connor Bleymeyer spoiled the shutout with a first-period pin.  The Class AA Wildcats forfeited at six weights in the match against one of the top 20 Class AAA programs in the state.

Tucker Sachs had two goals and an assist and Joey Kirchner had two assists to lead the Vikings to a 5-2 win over the Gentry Academy Stars Tuesday, December 4 at TRIA Rink in St. Paul.  Goalie Jake Turek stopped 26 of 28 shots to pick up the win.

After starting their season with a win over St. Croix Lutheran, the Wildcat boys basketball team dropped two tough game this week, with a furious comeback falling short against Zimmerman and a blowout to a big school in Centennial.

Hannah Gillach hit the go-ahead basket with just over a minute and a half to go in the Wildcats’ game against Zimmerman last week, and then Sophie Wood swatted a last-second Thunder shot away to preserve a one-point win for CL, their first of the year.

A goal by Claire DeVries early in the third period cut the Rogers lead to one, but the Bluejackets held off the Wildcat girls’ hockey team until scoring an empty-netter with 90 seconds to go in the game to seal a 5-3 win  The game was played Tuesday, December 4 at Chisago Lakes Arena.
