Most 24 year olds are lucky if they’ve taken a spring break trip here or a semester abroad there, but Chisago Lakes’ Amy Budde not only has traveled around the world already, but she has traveled around the world doing what she loves: playing hockey.

CL falls short in upset bid vs second-ranked Becker
Becker 21, Chisago Lakes 14
When the Wildcats fell behind to the second-ranked Becker Bulldogs 14-0 in the first quarter of last Friday’s game in front of the home crowd, the possibility of a blowout loss reared its ugly head. But the Wildcats got back in the game, scoring twice in the third quarter to tie it 14-14. The Bulldogs responded with a touchdown late in the third quarter and held off the Wildcats for a 21-14 win.

It has been years since the Chisago Lakes volleyball team beat their cross county rival in North Branch, but they shook the monkey off their back on Thursday, September 16 in a Mississippi 8 Conference match up against the Vikings.

Chisago Lakes Girls
The Wildcat girls put a scare into the St. Francis Fighting Saints, who are ranked eighth in the state, by scoring right at the beginning of the game. But the Fighting Saints came back to score twice to beat the Wildcats 2-1. The game was played Tuesday, September 14 at St. Francis High School.

NB stays unbeaten in girls soccer
North Branch 3, Big Lake 0
The Big Lake Hornets play a defensive style of soccer that makes it tough for teams to get off good shots with the ball in play, which the Vikings experienced in a home game last Thursday. So, the Vikings, who controlled the ball for virtually the entire game, had to find another way to score. And they did. Led by freshman Drew Moryn and senior Emmie Meyer,  the Vikings scored three goals off corner kicks and shut out the Hornets 3-0.

After a quarter of a decade, Brown steps down from CL baseball
Jay Brown has resigned as head coach of the Chisago Lakes Wildcats baseball team. Brown joined the Wildcat baseball program as an assistant coach 25 years ago and took over as head coach for longtime coach Pat Collins in 2015.

Cambridge-Isanti girls take it to Chisago Lakes in the pool
The Chisago Lakes Wildcat swimming and diving team was hoping to get a little bit better results against Cambridge-Isanti after they had opened with a tough test against Becker, but they struggled early, and it was too big of a hole to climb out of on Thursday, September 16 at the Bluejacket pool.

Grit and horses. What could make a better story? Grit, the courage and resolve to push through all difficulties to achieve a goal, is certainly what it took for local rider, Cecilia Emilsson (Cissi) to negotiate all the phases of the American Eventing Championships contest, winning the Novice Division September 4 in Lexington, Kentucky. Emilsson did this top a former race horse, Blazing Angel.

Center City Council tackled a number of items last week as thunder shook city hall last when an unexpected front moved through.  Citizens were making some noise of their own,  asking about everything from too bright lighting at the mall to opposing the fishing pier location over winter.

North Branch and Duluth East came into their game on Friday night after both dominated in their season opener, but North Branch proved to be the stronger of the two, beating East 34-19 and moving to 2-0 on the year.

North Branch stays unbeaten, looking to enter state rankings
North Branch 0, Grand Rapids 0 (OT)
The Viking girls’ soccer team outplayed and outshot the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks at home on Tuesday, August 31, but when it was all over the teams settled for a 0-0 overtime tie.  Viking head coach Josh Kopp said “We outshot them 30-10, including about 18-4 in shots on goal.  We had eight corner kicks but couldn’t finish any of them.  It was one of those games where we found everything but the back of the net.”

Wildcats grab their first wins with shutouts over Marshall and FL

The Cloquet-Carlton Lumberjacks scored in the first half and held off the Wildcat girls’ soccer team for a 1-0 victory Wednesday, September 1 at Chisago Lakes High School.  Wildcat head coach Wayne Kugel said “This was our best outing to date.  We held the Lumberjacks scoreless in the second half and started to make significant strides with our overall game.  We competed.  We are starting to get our game plan rhythm. The girls were fantastic.  We expect to continue to get better with each match.”

Wildcats defense creates havoc in 33-6 drubbing over Big Lake
Chisago Lakes 33, Big Lake 6
The Wildcats turned three Big Lake turnovers into touchdowns in the first half and went on to beat the Hornets 33-6 Thursday, September 2 at Big Lake High School.  Quarterback Nick Wasko led the Wildcats’ offensive dominance with 28 carries for 184 yards and three touchdowns as the Wildcats piled up 325 yards on the ground.  Fullback Ashton Pearson took care of most of the rest of the workload, carrying the ball 13 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Bulldogs fall to Bandits, season comes to end
East Bethel 10, Chisago Lakes 5
In the Region 1C play-in game, the East Bethel Bandits broke open a close game with six runs in the seventh inning and went on to beat the Bulldogs 10-5 Thursday, August 5 at Solheim Field in Princeton. The loss ended the season for the Bulldogs and the Bandits moved on to the double-elimination portion of the tournament.

Bulldogs advance in playoffs after upsets over Rum River
Eastern Minny League Central Playoffs
The Eastern Minny League Central playoffs were played in a double-elimination format.  The first place Isanti Redbirds were given an automatic bid into the Region 1C playoffs, leaving three teams – the Bulldogs, the North Branch Nighthawks, and the Rum River Bandits – to fight it out for the remaining two bids to regions.  The league decided to play all three playoff games in one day.  The Bulldogs hosted the playoff tournament at Pat Collins Field at Chisago Lakes High School on Saturday, July 31.

Bulldogs crush Cubs in finale
Braham 13, Chisago Lakes 10
The Bulldogs lost a wild one to the Braham Snappers 13-10 at home on Friday, July 16.  The strange game included three four-strikeout innings, four Bulldogs hit by pitches – including the same player three times – five Bulldogs reaching first on dropped third strikes, a bad call that led to two Snapper runs and a bizarre play that stopped a Bulldog rally.

Bulldogs close to grinding out tight games

Tyler Stilp pitched well against the East Bethel Bandits, but the Wildcats only scored twice and lost to the Bandits 3-2 Wednesday, June 9 at Chisago Lakes.  Stilp allowed three tuns – two earned – on eight hits, walked one, hit one and struck out five.
