Chisago Lakes wins huge early showdown with Monticello
Chisago Lakes 3, River Falls 2 (O.T.)
In the battle of Wildcats versus Wildcats, Ales Walden scored an unassisted goal at 6:21 of overtime to give Chisago Lakes a 3-2 win over River Falls (Wisc.) Tuesday, December 4 at Wildcat Centre Arena in River Falls.

After blowing out Columbia Heights to open the season, the North Branch girls basketball team blew through another opponent on Friday, December 7 when they doubled up Mora 48-24.

Wildcats working hard early
Cambridge-Isanti 74, Chisago Lakes 6
A tough Class Cambridge-Isanti Bluejacket squad crushed the Wildcats 74-6 at Chisago Lakes High School last Thursday, December 6.  The Wildcat trailed 74-0 before Connor Bleymeyer spoiled the shutout with a first-period pin.  The Class AA Wildcats forfeited at six weights in the match against one of the top 20 Class AAA programs in the state.

North Branch shines on the big stage
North Branch 5, Gentry Academy 2
Tucker Sachs had two goals and an assist and Joey Kirchner had two assists to lead the Vikings to a 5-2 win over the Gentry Academy Stars Tuesday, December 4 at TRIA Rink in St. Paul.  Goalie Jake Turek stopped 26 of 28 shots to pick up the win.

After starting their season with a win over St. Croix Lutheran, the Wildcat boys basketball team dropped two tough game this week, with a furious comeback falling short against Zimmerman and a blowout to a big school in Centennial.

Girls win two straight to break out of slump
Hannah Gillach hit the go-ahead basket with just over a minute and a half to go in the Wildcats’ game against Zimmerman last week, and then Sophie Wood swatted a last-second Thunder shot away to preserve a one-point win for CL, their first of the year.

Wildcats finally get their first win, beating Somerset 7-4

A goal by Claire DeVries early in the third period cut the Rogers lead to one, but the Bluejackets held off the Wildcat girls’ hockey team until scoring an empty-netter with 90 seconds to go in the game to seal a 5-3 win  The game was played Tuesday, December 4 at Chisago Lakes Arena.

Vikings start well in tourney before dropping M8C contest to St. Francis

Five different Vikings scored in the season opener against Minnesota River at the Simley Turkey Trot last weekend, as the Vikings rolled over the Bulldogs 5-1.  “We were really dependent on two goal scorers last year,” said Viking head coach Matt Cottingham, referring to Cody Moline, who graduated, and UMD-commit Brady Meyer, who moved on to juniors.  “The game went better than I thought it would.  It’s always nice to win with such a young team.”  The game was played Friday, November 23 at Veterans Arena in Inver Grove Heights.

Wildcats continue hot start, blow out Somerset and Northern Lakes
Chisago Lakes 6, Somerset 1
After crushing their first two opponents in the Thanksgiving tournament, the Wildcats kept the momentum going in their next two games, improving to 4-0 with convincing wins over the Somerset Spartans and the Northern Lakes.  Against Somerset, it was truly a team effort on the scoreboard as six different players scored goals in a 6-1 Wildcat victory.  Thomas Overgaard was the lead playmaker in this one, getting three assists in addition to scoring one of the goals.  The game turned to be more than a bit chippy, as the teams took 22 penalties between them and five of the game’s seven goals were scored on power plays.  The game was played Tuesday, November 27 at the Somerset Youth Civic Center.

'Cats handle two tough L's

The Wildcat girls’ hockey team dominated the Orono Spartans in the season opener, outshooting them 48-22.  But a couple of bad line changes and a penalty shot helped the Spartans build a 4-0 lead early in the second period.  The Wildcats rallied, but their comeback attempt fell just short as they lost 4-3.  The game was played Tuesday, November 13 at Orono Ice Arena.

Cambridge-Isanti offense too much for CL in section semis
The Wildcat football season ended at the section semifinal game against the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets last Saturday.  Three Wildcat fumbles for the sixth-seeded Wildcats allowed the Bluejackets to build a 35-14 lead early in the third quarter.  The teams traded touchdowns for the rest of the game.  The Wildcats never got closer than two scores, and the Bluejackets came away with a 55-35 win.

It’s been quite some time since North Branch had an qualifier in the boys state cross country meet, but a pair of seniors pushed through that drought and qualified for the prestigious meet at St. Olag College in Northfield on Saturday, November 3.

CL loses finale before upsetting Coon Rapids

Playing at home against the Monticello Magic in their final regular season game, the Wildcat football team found themselves trailing 28-7 entering the fourth quarter.  The Wildcat offense came alive late and closed the score to 28-21 with 1:28 left in the game.  But the Wildcat attempt at an onside kick was unsuccessful and the Wildcats lost 28-21.  The game was played last Wednesday, October 16 at Chisago Lakes High School.

CL girls fall short in section finals
Duluth Marshall 4, Chisago Lakes 0
With the second-seeded Wildcat girls soccer team trailing 1-0 to the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers late in last Thursday night’s Section 7A championship matchup, it was still anybody’s game.  But the Hilltoppers scored on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute and added another goal three minutes later to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.  They scored once more in the second half and shut out the Wildcats 4-0.  The game was played at Duluth East High School.  The win for the Hilltoppers sent them to the state tournament.  The loss for the Wildcats ended their season just short of their second state tournament appearance.

SOCCER SECTION REPORT: CL Girls fall short in section championship game
Chisago Lakes 6, Proctor 0
Sophomore Avery Constant and freshman Madison Kubalek scored two goal each as the second-seeded Wildcats derailed the fifteenth-seeded Proctor Rails 6-0 in the opening round of the Section 7A playoffs last Thursday, October 11 at Chisago Lakes.  The win allowed the Wildcats to advance to the next round of the playoffs, at home to the Esko Eskomos last Saturday.

CL runs into Buffalo buzzsaw
If you ever wanted to see 100 points scored in a high school football game, you came close to getting your wish last Friday night at Buffalo High School, as the Wildcats and the Buffalo Bison combined to score 97 points.  Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Buffalo scored the lion’s share of those points.  Bison quarterback Adrian Bouman lived up to his well-deserved hype, throwing for 458 yards and six touchdowns to lead Buffalo to a 62-35 win over the Wildcats.  The teams battled back and forth in the first half, with Buffalo scoring twice in the last two minutes to take a 35-28 lead into halftime.  They pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 27-7.  Buffalo improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Wildcats dropped to 2-5.

It wasn’t easy at times, but the Chisago Lakes girls swimming and diving team got its first win of the year with a 104-82 victory over Princeton  Thursday, October 11.

North Branch moves to quarterfinals before shut-out by Hermantown
North Branch 2, Mesabi East 1
Senior Jose Flor scored both goals for the fourth-seeded Vikings boys’ soccer team to lead them to a 2-1 win over the thirteenth-seeded Mesabi East Giants in the opening round of the Section 7A playoffs Thursday, October 11 at North Branch High School.  It was the first home playoff game since 2009 for the Vikings.  The win sent the Vikings to a quarterfinal matchup with fifth-seeded Hermantown.

NB's upset bid comes up short vs CL

The Wildcats girls’ soccer team, after having one of the best regular seasons in school history, needed a late goal on a penalty kick from Selina Lee to beat the improving Vikings 2-1 last Thursday, October 4.  The game was played on Senior Night for the Vikings at the brand-new turf field at North Branch High School.  The Vikings gave their fans something to cheer about against the rival Wildcats, who are seeded second in the upcoming section playoffs.

In last Thursday’s boys’ soccer rivalry game at Chisago Lakes High School, the Wildcats shadowed Viking senior forward Jose Flor for the entire game, with Wildcat junior Alex Bachmeier seemingly asked to do most of the dirty work.  Flor, the scoring leader for the Vikings and one of the top scorers in the state, barely touched the ball for the entire game.  The Wildcats scored twice and shut out the Vikings 2-0.

St. Francis spoils Chisago Lakes' homecoming with 28-7 drubbing
Despite their 2-3 record going into last Friday’s homecoming game with the St. Francis Fighting Saints, the Wildcats had played well overall and given themselves a chance to win in each of the season’s first five games.  But the Wildcats struggled from the outset against the ball-control offense and aggressive defense of the Saints, and the Saints came away from the Chisago Lakes High School football field with a 28-7 win that didn’t seem that close.  The game was played in a fine mist that fell throughout the game before an overflow cloud of over 1,500 people.

Avery Constant and Megan Cartier scored six minutes apart in the first half and it was enough to lift the Wildcats to a 2-1 win over the Class AA Buffalo Bison last Thursday, September 27 at Chisago Lakes.

North Branch tops Chisago Lakes 3-1 in M8C volleyball
Although the North Branch-Chisago Lakes volleyball rivalry has been one-sided lately in favor of the Vikings, the Wildcats did grab a set this time, as North Branch prevailed 3-1 at CL’s home court on Thursday, September 27.

Another heartbreaking defeat for CL, as Rogers storms back
For the Rogers Royals, last Friday night’s Homecoming game couldn’t have had a better script.  Having scored with 2:22 left to cut the Wildcat lead to 9-7, the Royals needed to successfully execute an onside kick in order to have a chance to win.  All the Wildcats had to do seal the win was to recover the onside kick.  The Rogers kicker drove the ball hard into the ground to the right.  As it skittered towards the right sideline, two Wildcats had a shot at it but could not secure the ball.  The Royals fell on it at the Wildcat 38-yard line.  Rogers drove to the Wildcat 24-yard line and, with 44 seconds left in the game, Bjorn Charles kicked a 41-yard field goal to give the Royals a 10-9 lead.  The Wildcats failed to move the ball on their ensuing possession and the Royals came away with their first win of the season.

Kobe Chouinard took over as North Branch’s quarterback before their game against Cloquet, and the Vikings have since gone 2-0 with an upset over the second-ranked Lumberjacks and a 47-0 drubbing of the Hibbing Bluejackets at North Branch’s homecoming on Friday, September 28.

AREA SOCCER ROUND UP
North Branch 1, Princeton 0
Sophomore Sylvia Linkert scored the only goal of the game 25 minutes into the second half to give the Viking girls’ soccer team a 1-0 victory over the Princeton Tigers Tuesday, September 18 at Princeton.  It was just the second win of the season for the Vikings.

CL's bid for upset comes up short against Elk River
Elk River, ranked second in Class 5AA, scored the go-ahead touchdown with 36 seconds remaining to beat the upset-minded Wildcat football team 28-21 last Friday, September 21 at Elk River High School.  The Wildcats led 21-20 when the Elks got the ball at their own 35 with four minutes left in the game.  The Elks went on a 13-play drive that included two conversions on fourth and one.  On first and ten from the Wildcat 13 with 43 seconds left in the game, Elk River’s Kevin Egbujor took a handoff, ran through a hole on the left side of the line and dove through Wildcat tacklers into the end zone for a touchdown to put the Elks up 26-21.  Egbujor also ran for the two-point conversion to put the Elks up by seven.

North Branch crunches second-ranked Cloquet 18-14
Cloquet had North Branch’s number last year. The Lumberjacks beat North Branch at their own homecoming last year, and then ended their season in the section championship game before going on to finish second in the state tournament. It’s safe to say North Branch owed them one.
